Brazil - Best Beach destination in May

We are thinking of doing a last minute trip to Brazil in about 6 weeks time, we plan on arriving around the middle of May, spend 3 or 4 nights in Rio then head off to a beach resort. We know that May is Autumn in Brazil but would ideally like somewhere warm with a nice beach, better if it's a private hotel beach, we don't know if we should stay south of Rio or a little north maybe Buzios or head much further north to Salvador da Bahia or even further to Fortalezza. The weather will be important as this is a beach holiday so we need to know the best area with less rain.

qwovadis, but is May a good month to visit Florianopolis? Is it warm enough?

Anyone?

Florianopolis is likely to be quite cool, indeed cold at that time of year. Swimming or lazing on a beach won't be much fun. The esteemed quovadis appears to be some sort of automated program, he used to haunt other travel fora, invariably providing links to travel agencies etc. I doubt he/she has ever stepped foot in Brazil.

That time of year you would be better heading to the north east. Weather will be more stable around Fortaleza but it's a dull city. Consider João Pessoa for a few days or Maragogi, Porto de Galinhas etc. Buzios will be too cool to swim at in May. Th water is cold to start with, even in summer. Furthermore it will be fairly dead at that time of year.

May is traditionally the wettest month in Salvador but with the usual caveats you can generally enjoy some beach time and there's so much else on offer even on those days when it's raining solidly.
