Argentina - beginning itinerary planning
Hi,
I'm at the very beginning of planning a trip to Argentina in early April. Right now, I think I want to spend a few days in the lake district, then about a week in Buenos Aires, then a few days in at Iguazu Falls. Beyond that, I haven't really decided anything.
I'm looking for general suggestions, places to stay, things to do, what to eat, how to get from point A to point B, alternate itineraries (to the extent that the above is an "itinerary", anything you've got.
Thank you,
Sue

My itinerary in Argentina was Iguasu (3n) including the Brazilian side of the falls; El Calafate(3n), Ushuaia(2n) and Buenos Aires (5n) including a day trip to Montevideo.
I was in february and the weather was great. You must consider that april is autumn season in South.
In Iguasu you can see the argentinian and the brazilian side of the falls, the birds park, the Itaipu dam and you can spend few hours in Ciudad del Este(a very strange city in Paraguay).
El Calafate is near the Perito Moreno Glacier and Argentina lake. The All Glacier Boat trip is an option. Another option is the trekking to the glacier.
For Ushuaia ( the southernmost city in the World )I recommend the Pira tour day trip to the penguins island and the half day tour to the "Eclaireur lighthouse and the Seal's Island".
Buenos Aires is beautiful. If you havent more time to visit you can arrange for a day with private guide. The tango show it's a must.
About the food ,in Calafate you must eat lamb, in Ushuaia king crabe at Tante Nina restaurant and in BA a lot of beef.

We arrived in Argentina from the US and Immediately transferred between airports and went to Iguazzu Falls. You can do the falls in two days, or one full day. We only went on the Argentia side becuase we did not want to pay the Visa fees for the Brail side. We stayed in the town, instead of the park and we liked our hotel...Hotel jardin. The town is not much, no real cute shops, but ate at a few good restaurants. We then went to BA for 6 days, and I have stated in another response, I think it was a day too much...all the big sights you can cover in 4-5 days....IN BA we stayed at the Hilton then moved to The Mine hotel in Palermo...LOVED that area and would tell anyone to stay in Palermo...lots of nice shops and restaurant. We really enjoyed the Mine hotel

we spent 3 months in Argentina in 2008 and loved every minute. We were there from Oct to Dec so a different time of year to your visit and the weather will clearly be different which will have a bearing on some of your options.
Highlights for me were many but I would single out the far northwest around Salta - - spectacular scenery, great food and friendly people.
depending on how long you have got a side trip to Colonia or Montevideo in Uruguay may be worth considering.
Iguazu falls is a true wonder of the world and well worth the time and trouble to visit.
A few photos, our itinerary and more info on our blog (Entries #70 on) http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog...ai/1/tpod.html
As for travelling around, we found the bus services, particularly Andesmar to be v. efficient, v. comfortable and a great way to travel. Buses are also a lot cheaper than flying for non Argentines who are charged something like 3 times the fare for residents. Although, I believe it is possible to pre purchase some sort of airpass outside of the country before you travel.
