Air fare to Peru

I'm planning on a trip to Peru in Sept and have been watching air fares out of Boston. Least expensive option was about $1500 (Boston-Cusco-Puerto Maldonado-Boston).

Yesterday it went down to $1200 (American and Lan flights) on vayama, orbitz, AAA website and others. On the Lan site it is still about $1600; more on the American site. Thought I read here somewhere to book directly with the airline, but I don't know why tht would be necessary. Has anyone used any of the travel sites to book air travel to Peru Do you forsee any problems not going thru Lan? Thanks for any insight you can offer.

Hi Jackie

Get my best deals out of BOS via FLL to LIM

with Spirit.com go first class for the price

of coach on the others.

WAY cheaper than the majors for me.

Last paid $239 RT Jan last year plus $50 each way

to upgrade to their big leather first class seats.

An econo but new nice Airbus planes at best price for me.

So play around there for best price.

Starperu.com good deals on PM legs

way cheaper than LAN which charges

tourists IN PERU $178.50 per person per flight

non-resident surcharge usually costing far more.

if you are looking for jungle from Cusco go to

manuadventures.com save flight cost better wildlife.

TACA also had significantly higher prices for foreigners than locals; I don't mind this, with the poverty I saw in Peru I don't mind subsidizing.

LAN had roundtrip flights same day from Puno (Juliaca) to Lima for $126 so I don't think it is true that they charge $178.50 per person for every flight.

I booked my tickets thru AAA last night. When I saw the post above about nonresident surcharges, I called the AAA travel agent. They checked with Lan and told me the ticket price includes everything; there are no additional surcharges. There use to be, but there are none now.

That would be good news if LAN dropped the $178 surcharge.
But there website does not indicate this, the Base fare still has the surcharge.

What you may be getting is a discounted fare because you are flying them internationally. This is different than flying a cheapo airline like Spirit and trying to pick up a stand alone domestic fare on LAN.

At any rate, I'm sure you will enjoy Peru and if you avoid the high price tour repackagers you will find it a very affordable place to visit.

mlb--You are probably right about the international discount. I just know I was pleased with a fare that had gone down more than $300. But when I saw the above post, I thought Lan was going to be asking me for more money upon check-in. That was my question to the travel agent. Even if I had gone Spirit + internal flights, the price would have been comparable, if not more. I think I got a good deal.

I appreciate all your posts and have gotten good tips from you.
