8 hour layover in Salvador, Brazil

I have 8 hours to occupy while awaiting friends at the airport in Salvador. I'm arriving at 6:30 a.m. Is it easy to get into the city? What's the best place to recuperate after an overnight flight while waiting? How much will a taxi cost?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

If you post on TA, there is a great destination expert there who has given responses to this question. Salvador airport does not have much to pass such a long time.

I had the same situation a few years ago. It's about an hour taxi ride, depending on traffic, from the airport to Pelourinho, the historic center of Salvador. It cost about USD$75 each way. Brazil was incredibly expensive with the poor exchange rate from US dollars. Pelourinho is a nice area to relax and eat. Just be careful about wandering down side streets away from the tourist zone.

Living in Bahia since many years.
There is a fine selection possible for things to do in Salvador in a limited amount of time.

Taxi-rides have become a bit cheaper the last year due to the loss of value from the Brazilian real to the dollar / euro.

You may always PM me for specific questions

Greetings from the TA's destination expert ;-)

Just browsing older posts and just fyi.....
Destination Experts on the other forum mentioned are listed on the site. The DE referred to by tengohambre was called "TCantarelli", a woman tourist (not the guide above claiming to be). Buyer beware--even for accurate information.
