8 hour layover in Bogota

I will be traveling with my husband from Houston to Lima in March, with a long layover in Bogota on the way. I have read that 8 hours is enough time to see the city, but I was hoping for suggestions regarding a "route" to take. We arrive in Bogota at 6:00am on a Sunday, departing at 1:45pm. With travel time to/from the airport, along with time to go back through security, I expect we have about 5 hours of exploring available. Is that a good estimate?

We want to see the "highlights" of the city, but do not expect to enter many places (museums, art galleries, etc). If there are one or two that are worth entering and will not take much time to experience, that is something we would like to know about. Otherwise, we are content marveling at the architecture and design from the plazas. We also love parks, gardens, fountains, etc., so a route that takes us through something like that would be wonderful!

I would appreciate any advice! Thank you!

Could someone please help me with this?

We just returned from Colombia, Cartagena and Bogota, and loved both cities. With regard to your question, I would definitely concentrate your time in La Candelaria, the old part of Bogota – very scenic, with a lot of character and history, plus couple of really nice museums that don't require a lot of time (I highly recommend the Botero museum).

To make the most of your time, I'd advise your to hire a guide with a car. We used Edgar, who owns Explora Bogota – he was terrific.

Hope this helps.

The Botero is great! Also the gold museum, but you definitely wouldn't have time to see that :(

Susan, great trip report by the way. I used it to help prepare for our trip.

Thank you johnny99! I see most of their tours begin at 9:00am, and our flight arrives at 6:00am, so I emailed them to see if they have a guide they could send earlier.

We will definitely check into La Candelaria and the Botero! Thank you for replying :)
