What do you mean by DIY trek to Machu Picchu? You can not trek any of the Inca Trail without a guide? Or are you meaning that you are staying in Aguas Calientes every night and hiking up to MP every morning? I would definitely allow for at least a full day on Ollantaytambo.

There's no such thing as a DIY trek to Machu Picchu. The only trek to Machu Picchu is the inca trail and you need permits and a guide for that. If you refer to staying in aguas calientes and making your way up to Machu Picchu i suppose that is ok (it's about an hour to walk all the way up there). You also have hikes in Machu Picchu like huayna picchu or mount machu picchu ,is that what you meant?

I would start my stay in Ollantaytambo to acclimate to the altitude, as it is significantly lower than Cusco.
Then go to Aguas Calientes from there. For you, I recommend one or two nites in AC. Most people here say that a day trip is sufficient, but I think it is useful to stay overnite. As stated above, you cannot do a hike from Ollantay to Machu Picchu by yourself but you can do some hiking around Machu Picchu. Then take an early train back to Cusco in time to meet your group. |
