19 day Peru itinerary including 4 day Inca Trail to MP

Hello all,

I have been reading all the Peru threads posted here and have got alot of useful information from them. However, my girlfreind and I are due to fly to Peru in a few weeks and if possible would like some input from all you wise travellers out there. Any help would be appreaciated especially given the repetitive nature of my post.

We fly to Lima on the 7th June 2011 flying in early evening Peru time. Having read widley that the general consesus is to spend little time in the capital we plan to stay one night there to rest and fly to Cusco the next day. (We will have another day to explore there the day prior to flying back home)

We have booked the Inca trail trek to MP on the 15th June leaving us 6 days to acclimatise to the altitude before our trek. Is it better to stay in Ollantaytambo for a few days first or is Cusco the better option given the amount of time we will be there?

In Cusco we plan on seeing the megalthic sites, the sacred Valley, Temple of the Sun, some white water rafting perhaps and other activites and sights the City has to offer before our trek.

As the trek takes up 4 days we will back in Cusco on 19th June. This is where we need help as we seem to be doing part of the "Gringo trail" backwards and in only 8 days as we fly back out of Lima on the 28th June.

We know we wont be able to see everything that these places have to offer. However, we hope to see such wonderful places such as Lake Titicaca, Colca Canyon plus any other reccomendations before we head back to Lima via Puno and Arequipa.

Does this sound realistic given that we only have 8 days to travel from Cusco back to Lima by road/buses and are there decent places to stay?

I shall continue my research and Im sure when we actually get there things will change but if any one has any suggestions or ammendments they would be greatly recieved.

(Maybe in hindsight it would have been better to book the MP trek a little later into the trip but we cannot do anything about that now).

Safe travelling and thanks,

Adam

Seems like u are trying to do a "reverse" Gringo Trail

Doable but not ideal lots easier to get sick from altitude

adventures.worldnomads.com/destination/168/itinerary/23.aspx

To adjust to altitdue see lots more and save the best(MP)

for last prefer to go UP the Gringo Trail then do Inka Trail

then fly back CUZ LIM.

ollantaytambo.org apulodge.com in SV 8900 ft

better to adjust to altitude than Cusco 11000 ft.

If you do fly take Diamox to prevent altitude illness

and sleep as low as you can in the SV till you get

adjusted for your trek.

Still you can reverse it if you like if careful.

andeantravelweb.com approved trek providers

careful many scammers always pay with CC/Paypal

never wire money have seen folks lose thousands.

insuremytrip.com stikes cancellations theft weather wise.

Happy Travels

I think if you spend a few days in Ollantaytambo and then back to Cusco before your Trek you will be fine. You should have plenty of time to see those other sights after the trek.

many thank to you both for your replies. As we are pushed for time and are unable to move the MP trek backwards i think we will fly to cusco and stay in ollan as suggested. I will be sure to check out all the links posted and thanks once again or your input. Much appreciated!
