It would be 1 hour and 20 minutes from Berlin. If you have done this do you think it was worth the time? What would you say is a must see? It would be on Saturday or Sunday. Has anyone been to the Christmas market?

If you want to go to Saxony and have already seen Dresden, Leipzig might not be the worst choice!

yes, I have done it and of course it was worth it. I loved Leipzig, the only bad point was not getting to see everything I wanted. Must sees are individual, they depend on your interests. I'm sure there are some websites that can tell you the main tourist attractions.

I'm very interested in classical music, so my must sees had to do with composer homes, like Bach and Schumann and Mendelssohn. I visited their homes (Bach and Mendelssohn), but didn't have time to see Schumann's. They are all museums. Of course if you are not interested in those composers, those wouldn't be a must-see for you. Other than that, I really enjoyed the Old Town Hall and the coffee museum.

But really, just look at their tourism website or a guidebook and decide what is important for you to see.

I have been to the Christmas market and thought it was a good one. Around the corner from the main square they have a medieval one that is interesting.
St. Thomas church is also interesting and is right there by the market.

Leipzig I found ho-hum for German cities and unless you have a keen interest in things Christina has (which is fine!) then you may find other cities even closer to Berlin that may be nicer cities as cities go - like Luterstadt-Wittenberge - a nicely restored old town famous for Martin Luther being there a lot - nailing allegedly demands to the door of the local church to launch the Reformation.

Schwerin to the northwest is another gem - neat old town on a lake.

Of course Dresden is a real gem now that they are pieced much of the old town back together - once called Florence on the Elbe it is slowly reclaiming this title.

Hamburg is now a short enough train ride - said to have more bridges than Venice!

So IMO unless there is something outstanding for your interests in Leipzig there are IME better towns overall to consider.

Quedlingberg is another - a UNESCP World Heritage site.

DGMW - nothing wrong with Leipzig but to me at least not much to make it the top choice of possible day trips from Munich.

Hi Gomiki! Good to hear from you.

Definitely go to Leipzig. Very interesting old town with lots of shopping arcades, nice cafes/restaurants, the two churches (St. Nikolai and St. Thomas) absolutely worth seeing. The Christmas market is nice, but nothing special IMO. These markets in Dresden are way better ;-)
