Re "<i>I am always amazed by people who really don't care to travel at all, no curiosity, no knowledge of anything beyond their own little neighbourhood....mind boggling to me.</i>"
You must know that one doesn't need to travel the world to be intelligently curious about it, and to have a tremendous amount of knowledge. A library card, the internet, good mass media programming, continuing education all take one beyond their ordinary life. The possibilities are endless to an open mind.

Thanks heaven that everyone is different ..otherwise the World would have been a boring place..
Since I was a small child I had an insatiable curiousity about the world around us..
As a matter of fact if anyone would have asked me what I wanted to do when I grew up, my answer were always the same.."I Wanted to be an Explorer"..
As you can see,my passion for traveling and discovering new places, were already in my blood at a very tender age.
I have been very fortunate that I was able to do that and to live in various foreign countries included the US, which is my new Home now.

JanetKMR,
Since you live in Richmond and visited NYC and Chicago, you have traveled to another country. At least that is what I was often told when we lived in the "South." Sometimes, when I first moved to SC, (about 25 years ago) I thought they just might be right. I felt, going from the Boston area, that I had moved to a "furin" country.
Now, not sure where I would put Baltimore, don't think "Bawl-moreans" know either. If you haven't been here, come visit the world of John Waters, Hon & crackin' crab parties.

Original poster here. Dukey1 - Why would you make such a rude comment about Disneyworld tourists? I have traveled extensively in Europe, been to Asia, Africa, South America, Caribbean, Mexico, Canada and the US. But guess what? My husband and I love DisneyWorld. We got to relive childhood, made wonderful memories with our children when they were small and now we love to see the smiles on our grandsons faces when they see Mickey Mouse. Disney is a place for fantasy and family and what could be stupid about that.
I love to travel but realize people travel in many ways. They travel thru books, movies, television or actually going someplace. You should try Disney sometime, but go with an open mind and heart.

I find that stating you have been to the place the conversation is about can lead to the end of the conversation. I have learned to pick and choose when to say I have been somewhere. It is rare that someone will ask to hear more. Now days I rarely share where I have been unless I am asked.

29FEB: well-said. Not only that, but also this: just because somebody travels does not make him a better person in any way, shape, or form. Certainly there is no guarantee that a well-traveled person is any more open-minded or compassionate or even more interesting than somebody who's never left his neighborhood.

JanetKMR,
Since you live in Richmond and visited NYC and Chicago, you have traveled to another country.
___
I have traveled to other countries I spent 9 weeks in Europe when I was 15 & visited London, Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels and (then) West Berlin.
I'm happiest at home.....for me the work/stress/cost/reward isn't there.

>Apparently there are a lot of really stupid people in this world given that DisneyWorld is the most visited tourist destination on Earth!<
That statement is NOT self-contradictory.

Hi Sass,
>not sure where I would put Baltimore, don't think "Bawl-moreans" know either.<
I agree.
Having moved to another country, GA, I look upon my old home as being in the Northernmost Southren State.

I hate to admit it, but LucieV is right. I actually have two very close friends who don't travel. Both of them very bright and interesting. Some people are so cool they don't need to travel. For the rest of us, it helps.
Travel is like college. You don't have to go to be successful/interesting, but statistics would probably support the pro travel/college approach.
Everybody can be unexpected in their own way.

I don't mind admitting that LucieV is correct.
Not only does travel NOT guarantee one will be more open-minded or interesting, there's a chance no one will ever travel correctly if not done exactly the way that person did it........I've met people whose ONE trip to Paris (or NYC or SF) makes them an expert. They don't sound smarter or more worldly, they just sound more arrogant and self-righteous when they proclaim, "If you haven't eaten/stayed at/seen what I did, then you haven't done it correctly."

I don't think travel makes me any better or smarter than anyone else. But it is something I've worked very hard to be able to do in my life, so yes I am proud of it, like you would be any accomplishment.

There are people who will go to another country and only stay at a hotel that they have in the US, they only eat the closest things to American food and they are never really that comfortable because "everything is so foreign " ..
They will come home and tell you all the negatives ..
Some peoples minds are just locked shut I guess.
I know kids who work crappy jobs so they can save enough money to go to some country where you need a dozen shots and still end up sick from the water and they are more "worldly" and Open minded than many of the adults I meet who "travel" ..
Just because you get on a plane and stay in a hotel somewhere else, doesn't mean you are "wordly" or a "traveler" .. You have to be open to everything and change from the experiences.
( we have distant relatives who were offered a free hotel for a week in a South American country. They turned it down because they wanted to go on a cruise.
The same one , with the same friends, for the 5th time .. this is what I mean)
On the other hand, there are people who are content to be in the same place all the time but they still are open to everything and their lives are just as rich and full as anyone who wanders the globe.
So I guess my point is, my opinion on this is .. an open mind is what is important, not where you go or what you see but how you think about things and what things you think about.
Was that long winded or what ? sorry ~

<<<I chuckle at profiles on dating sites where 95% of people say they LOVE to travel. I guess travel is 'in' on dating sites!>>>
It gets really interesting when you talk to people who have said they love to travel on their profile and they tell you that they haven't even been out of their state. Okay... so it's not that you love to travel, it's that you think you'd like to travel?
<<<I've met people whose ONE trip to Paris (or NYC or SF) makes them an expert. They don't sound smarter or more worldly, they just sound more arrogant and self-righteous... >>>
A former co-worker did that constantly. He and his wife had taken a guided tour through a couple countries in Europe and proceeded to lecture me on how unsafe it was and how "the locals" were rude and wouldn't speak to them in English. Jerk.
As for the OP, I love it when I recognize a location in a movie. When Maid of Honor came out, I saw it in theaters with a friend. She hit me when I leaned over and said quietly "I was at that castle a couple weeks ago!"
