Calling the US from Costa Rica

Are calling cards the best way to call home? Where can we buy calling cards to call the US? Is it better to buy them in Costa Rica or in the US?

Many thanks

I think they are the best way. You can find them everywhere from airport, grocery stores, gift shops and even some hotels keep them on hand.

When we were there a couple of years ago we rented a cell phone at the same time as a car from Tricolor. The phone worked great for calling all over CR and back to the states. It was surprisingly cheap for the week - maybe a hundred bucks.

I guess it depends on your budget and length of trip. A $20 calling card can last me over 2 1/2 weeks.

Got a cell phone from Verizon as an emergency only resort. Phone is yours for just shipping, but it´s $3 a minute, fifty cents to send a text, .05 to receive one.

The internet cafes here in Granada generally have international calling to the USA at one cordoba (five cents US) a minute. I imagine that it´s the same in CR.

Another option is to take your computer and use SKYPE. Computer to computer is free and computer to land lines is very cheap. We had no trouble finding internet connections.
