My husband and I along with another couple are going to be staying in Morro Bay over the New Year. We are planning to go winetasting one day either in the Paso Robles or San Luis Obispo area. Which area would you suggest? I'm also looking for suggestions on restaurants.

My brother lives in the area, so I've done both areas on a number of occasions. While I enjoy many of the wines from the SLO region, I prefer the Paso Robles area for the wine tasting experience. I enjoy the Justin Winery on the west side. And Eberle is always a fun place to stop. Plus it's one of the few that doesn't have a tasting fee. There is also an olive oil tasting room up in the area.

I would have to agree with the last poster. Paso Robles is definitely the way to do. Generally, I'd say they have a better variety of types of wines as well (there is really a good amount of climatic variation between the east-side and west-side).

Recommendations? If you like Rhone varietals (Syrah, Grenache, Mouvedre, Rousanne, Marsanne, etc) you really will enjoy the place. Otherwise, I'd say Zins and Cabs are pretty good as well. Specific wineries include Justin, Tobin James, EOS, Eberle and Robert Hall.

For an incredible Zin, stop by the Rotta (google for map and directions) tasting room on 46 in Paso Robles.

Tobins James, EOS, Meridian, Bianchi, Summerwood, Tablas Creek, Justin and Red Coyote (house of reds) are all great places to wine taste. Buona Tavola is a nice place in Paso for an Italian meal. ***kim***
