yes there is and there is no getting around it. Plan ahead. There is also the two bag check through rule which makes it additionally difficult. What they do have is a shrink wrap machine which will allow you to wrap two pices of checked through baggage together therefore cutting three or four pieces down to two. If you have left with two carry on's each and now have to condense down to one this really helps.
When we were there the porter actually took us over to the machine that does the shrink wrapping.

Remember that you only have to get through security and yes they are tough about enforcement. However, once you are in the international terminal (assuming you are continuing on from Heathrow, or commencing in Heathrow) you can buy items at the duty free stores there and actually carry on to the plane more than one bag. There is a Boots Chemist and WH Smith etc. if that helps!! Most of my experience is with Ternminal 1.

Look at this extreme example from NapaMatt, who posted today re: Heathrow.
<i>"As for carry on baggage...my wife carries a small wallet / travel document holder, which we were told had to be in our carry on - what utter bullshit it all is. But be warned!"</i>
Does this question mean you are leaving for Africa soon?

Remember it was slack--very slack-- airport security and lousy intelligence which contributed to this, if not caused it, in the first place...something like 30 or 40 years after the first aircraft hijacking. We take a long time to learn our lessons. I have everything sympathy for the Brit authorities.

If you're just transferring from one flight (from ORD) to another (to NBO)and stay inside Terminal 4, do you still have to pass through security screening. I've avoided passing through LHR for so long, I've forgotten.
