Henry, I enjoyed your report immensely! Especially loved your comment: "Little girls giggling must be the sound of angels."
How wonderful for you to be able to share such a special time with your grandchildren! Loved the idea of the map-reading exercise. Especially appreciated all the restaurant info in Tuscany. Thank you again.

Beautiful report and very enjoyable reading. The time that you had to spend with your family and especially your granddaughters was, as American Express says, "priceless." Thank you for sharing such warm and happy moments.

Henry, that was wonderful - I especially appreciated "what I learned." and just read that to my husband as we have experienced the same with our grand daughters.
I have been really wanting to take the girls to Rome and your description and suggestion re. having our own docent increased my desire. I feel that we will have been in the county (Lucca and surroundings) or a long enough time so Rome would be a great change as well as experience. We (my husband and I) have traveled often to Rome and know the city well - would you take your grand daughters in July when it is likely to be very hot and will certainly be crowded with turisti?? This is my dilemma.

giannetta,
I brought all my grandchildren to Rome because I thought that they would appreciate the firsthand look at what they would study in school. I tried to be careful and have heavy tourist days sandwiched with days of no activities or time in the park.
My wife points out that Rome was never the favorite of any of the children. They all picked a small town as their favorite. They liked the art and history in small doses and preferred a town they could wander around. Pat says that she would rather take the kids to La Crociona where there is a pool and room for the kids to run around. She thinks that Pienza, San'Atimo, Monte Olievto Maggiore, etc are enough art and history for the kids.
Sorry, I know this doesn't help the decision process. Rome in July can be tough.
Since you are going to Lucca this trip report may be of interest http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34494897

Hello Henry, your fortunate grandchildren! And yes, grandchildren are a true blessing. I smiled about your teaching the girls to read maps, my father did that with me which to this day I appreciate.
A beautiful trip report Henry! And like cobbie I was wondering how all those purchased would be brought home..mailing them..I have done that, lol.
May you and your family have many more wonderful times in Italy!

Has anyone else noticed that suddenly an awful lot of old trip reports are being topped?
Is Fodors trying to revitalize the site?
If new posters are realizing the value of TRs and are searching them out thats great.
