If you happen to live in Queensland now but spent much of your life in New South Wales you don't care much whether the Blues or Maroons won the State of Origin. My local butcher near Cairns is going beserk with joy, though.

You would if you lived near my butcher, Neil. He was awfully miffed when he offered us a large maroon flag to display on front gate and husband was less than enthusiastic. Hope he doesn't punish us with inferior lamb chops from now on.

I actually saw this on the news, when the floods were on. The emergency crews were ferrying in supplies and I saw them passing out cartons of VB and I remember thinking at the time 'what the?'
Well, now I know why - who could possibly watch football without a beer? Not us apparently.

Mostly to Neil and Pat,
okay, so I was on my business
"Pre Marketing Forum trip (don't ask) and we found ourselves in ....drumroll...
Rockampton during the Origin thingie.
Now, I should interject here that I'm totally sports impaired - I don't watch any of the stuff in the US, so I have no clue of EVER understanding cricket (my favorite quote: like baseball on Valium); or rugby.
Right...so I'm in "Rocky" - our "hosts" (Tourism Queensland and Tourism Australia) have regaled us with all sorts of wild stories of what might be encountered during the evening. I am told (seriously) that I shouldn't wear my sandals because I could get "trod on" during this melee. The hosts are betting like mad on their teams.
We're staying at the Leichhardt Hotel ( remember we're staying in these hotels to get the "experience" and recommend them to clients). To be kind, let's just say I can't see myself sending anyone there soon.
So, all 20 agents shower, change, and off to the Great Western Hotel for an evening which I'm anticipating will involve: heated discussions about teams, a bar fight or two, and possibly people pukeing (not looking forward to that last bit).
We all arrive, and it's pretty much deserted. oh, okay, it's EARLY. We take a group photo and then out to the back of the pub, where, and you'd never belive this unless you saw it...is a full rodeo ring with seating for..........1200 people! Not only do they do rodeo performances there, but they host major country western performers - who knew?
They also have local tour operators for us to meet, which we do, and have a BBQ (cuz afterall, we're in the BEEF CAPITAL of Oz), ok, that over, and it's time to watch the game...
Right. So I go into the pub area with the "rest" of the people, which, including our group and staff, total about 10 people to watch the game.
How disappointing was THAT? But, as I was offered free Bundaberg rum in a can..Dark and Stormies...
So, I'm watching the game and followed the lead of several Aussie women there who were concentrating on the players, er...physical attributes. So after two cans I was rooting for #12...while others were yelling for goals, I could be heard yelling "take off his shirt!"
Ah yes, we all have our priorities!
After the "excitement" we (females) were urged not to walk back to the hotel alone. So as I walked alongside my 3 male escorts, with nary a person or car in sight I remarked how "safe" I felt.

The real benefit of Origin night is that there are fewer teams at pub trivia - and our mob won by mile!
On the negative side, the pub is not far from Olympic Park - and the traffic was awful! Bloody lost Queenslanders! Pity it wasn't their team lost, though!
The traffic issue doesn't arise when the game isn't in Sydney - but we won at trivia that night, too!

That's Rocky for you Melodie! Sorry, can't help asking --- why Rockhampton? Our local pub was deserted too for the match, apparently all at Courthouse Hotel in Cairns city with a huge outdoor screen.
I probably know about as much of Rugby League as you now do; forgot to watch the game on TV but couldn't admit that to butcher.
Margo - wotz pub trivia?

Pub trivia is the absolute height of my social life (now there's sad!).
Lots of pubs and clubs in Sydney have trivia nights, and the standard varies widely.
A group of friends meet at the pub near Flemington markets (central to most) on Wednesday nights, to have a feed and a drink together, participate in the quiz, which is now quite well organised, and generally have some fun. Last night, other teams back, we're relegated to third place (which only scores a dinner for 2 as a prize - not much use between 8 people). When's the next Origin match again?
