Just interested in hearing responses on where your favourite place in Europe is? It could be somewhere you have only visited once before, or somewhere you return to time and time again.
I have only been to Europe once myself, but fell in love with Germany and am just dying to go back. I also loved Venice.

I'd have to say Venice, even though you've been. We went 2x this year and it was so different from September than February. I am still entranced by Venice at night when the daytrippers are gone and you can wander down the streets and along the canals and it so quiet it is almost eerie. I love the fact that life is conducted on the water, from ambulances to boats carrying produce...

I have been there twice and I still can't find the right words, but I just LOVE Florence Italy!!! Some here at Fodors find it dirty and noisey. But not me. It could be that along with the city itself, the day trips are infinite!!

There is just something about Il Doumo that touches my heart, which is strange since I am not a religous person in the least.

Also, I agree with leahinsc, Venice at night after all the daytrippers have gone, is just magical. I loved checking out the 'dueling orchestras' at St Marks Square at night.

And if you are lucky enough to visit St Marks pre-dawn, totaly empty, talk about SERENE!!!

My passion is influencing my response - the Alps! Now I appreciate that I just covered a large part of Europe, so will try and narrow it down (difficult thought it is) - the Dolomites (remarkable, awe inspiring yet accessable) and the Tyrol (walking hut to hut).

We now live in the Piedmont (Italy), which literaly means at the foot of the mountains - so you can guess why we moved here.

I fell in love with a little place called Portovenere on the Ligerian (sp?) coast. It is similar...and close to Portofino. But for some reason it really made even more of an impression on me.

My DH and I went on our honeymoon there and will hopefully return someday!

I would take just about any restaurant or auberge between Dijon, Geneva, and Strasbourg for a Sunday mid-day dinner.

For me, Venice wins it for cities, but Plitvice Lakes in Croatia wins it for natural beauty. Absolutely phenomenal and unique to this world.

I also love Germany as well as Austria and Switzerland. We go as often as we can and I'm currently planning a month-long trip there in September - October 2007.

While there is so much diversity in this area, we especially love Hallstatt, Austria, and the Berner Oberland in Switzerland.

If I have one memory left at the end of my life.. I want to remember being in Orvieto, Tuscany, on a Sunday with a religious revival taking place outside the church..The clear crisp air, the bright sun, the white boothed market on the side of the church that was sellling oils, biscotti, soaps, etc. and the flea market a few blocks away, the lovely little shops displaying local pottery.. I stood in the square an pinched myself..I wanted to jump up and down and what I was experiencing at that very moment. It was a magical moment..I can still feel the air and see the bright vivid sun... If my short term memory is going to go... let this be something I remember...and let me have a few more years to have moments like this..in other spots.....

I have to agree with TRSW, my favorite place would have to be Firenze, followed closely by Venice and Rome.

But show me around Greece, and I'm sure those islands would give my beloved Firenze a good run for her money. Maybe.
