Restaurant Recommendations in Montreal
My husband and I will be in Montreal for two nights in July staying at the Hotel Nelligan. In doing research on good places to have dinner, I have run into quite a bit of criticism of Toque where originally I thought we would make a reservation. Would love to hear your recommendations of nice (doesn't need to overly fancy) places to have dinner; we enjoy all types of food and would love to try the best that Montreal has to offer (and if the criticism of Toque is not justified, would like to know that too!).

Ferreira Cafe is a wonderful Portugese restaurant with wonderful seafood. They are at 1446 rue Peel and website is www.ferreiracafe.com

If you like sushi, Shodan on Metcalfe (there is also one on Rene-Levesque) is delicious and has very unusual rolls. You must order the Kiss, Jade, and Flower rolls.
As for Toque, I have never been there, but heard mixed reviews. In montreal, many holes-in-the-wall are better and more authentic than the typical ones.

Sorry - that may have been a little unclear. What I mean to say is that the best restaurants are not necessarily the main ones on St. Lawrence that you may have heard about, although there are a few great ones like Moishe's Steakhouse and Schwartz's Deli (world famous).
Other suggestions - if you like Indian, Punjab Palace on Jean Talon and l'Acadie (don't be turned off by the atmosphere, wait till you try the food); Le Latini; Milos.

Le Bonaparte is a classic french in old montreal; my newest favorite restaurants are not in old montreal. One is Cavalli on Peel Street, just north of de Maisonneuve and also Savannah, on St. Laurent, just south of Mont Royal avenue.
In the summer, I try to go a few times to
il Cortile on Sherbrooke St. West, an italian restaurant with an outdoor terrace between buildings, so it's like a courtyard.
Toque is very fancy and everyone I know that has been have loved it.
L'Epicier in old montreal is wonderful and in a fun location.

I am one of those who think that any criticism of Toque is unjustified. I love everything about the place. The worst thing that I can say is that it is expensive. But we go every time we are in Montreal, which has been at least once sometimes twice a year for years now.
My other favorites are Cafe Ferreira on Peel, we always make a point to go there each trip.
Le Petit Extra on rue Ontario, wonderful. Perfect service, food and you will swear you are in Paris.
L'Express on St Denis-great.
Il Cortile is one of our new favorites, thanks to mitchdesj a couple of years ago
Also I second Bonaparte, a lovely dinner for two with excellent service and a nice stroll around the Old Town after..

Queue de Cheval is one of the best steak restaurants my husband and I have ever been to (and we live in NY)...we are going back to Montreal for 4 nights in late June and are looking forward to a great meal there! We also booked reservations at Les Ramparts (we are staying at the Auberge du Vieux-Port). They have a Saturday night tasting menu on the rooftop deck for the weekly fireworks show for $110 CAD. I took your advice ckfior and booked dinner for two at Les Remparts for the July 10 fireworks dinner combo. I have seen the fireworks for the past 5 years from every possible spot including La Ronde and the Jacqu Cartier Bridge to name a couple, however Im most excited about this. To marymarra you just can go to montrealfireworks.com and look at the country listings which happends to be the 20th anniversary with only former winners of compettion being invited to compete.

We celebrated my husband's 50th birthday at Toque. We had a 6 course dinner and it was fantastic. We will go back this July.
Bonaparte has a great fixed price lunch (or they did in 2000). It was a great value.

I am not sure what time the fireworks actually start but the tasting dinner on the rooftop starts at 7:00. It is an international competition that goes on all summer - every Saturday night a different country competes.
Also, an open question - we have been to Montreal before but we have never gone to the casino...can anyone tell me how it is? Best way to get there? We would be going either Thursday night or Friday night...any thoughts? Thanks, ckf

TOQUE IS SO TOTALLY WORTH IT! A truly sensual experience...don't miss the foie gras!! Also had a fine meal at a French bistro called LES INFIDELES. Nice atmosphere with regular locals going there. Also, it's BYOB (so you save on wine costs) and SMOKE-FREE. Montreal has a plethora of fine restaurants. Also heard good things about LES CAPRICES DE NICHOLAS and LES HALLES (smoking permitted in this place, though). Bon appetit!

About the casino to answer ckfior's question, the best way to travel there from downtown is by taxi. You can expect to pay about $12 total and it drops you off right at the front door. Also if you werent in such a hurry you could take the metro to the Jean Drapeau stop and jump on bus 167 which will also take you there. This will take slightly longer but it can be a savings especially if you have already purchased a tourist metro card which I would highly reccomend. The fireworks start at 1000pm every saturday and even a few select wednesdays.
