Oxford, Blenheim and Rollright Stones

Thinking about a future UK visit - London will take care of itself but would like to include a 2-3 day side trip.…
probably train to Oxford for overnight at least, then bus or train to Blenheim but how to visit Rollright?

(BTW, as I tried to search this a bit, I didn’t realize it’s one word so found many posts about rock ‘n roll and The Rolling Stones)

Thanks to anyone who can offer advice.

I can't see any way to visit the Rollright Stones without renting a car or at least hiring a local driver.

Meant to add -- they are about 8 miles from Moreton-n-Marsh, 6-ish miles from Kingham and 10+ miles from Charlbury (the only nearby stations) and there is no bus service that I'm aware of.

After I get over the jet lag (WHY did I wake up at 0-dark thirty??!), pick up the animals, retrieve two packages from FedEX, attend a city council meeting tonight, tomorrow's city inspection of the recent HVAC installation, unpack and do the laundry and dry cleaning . . . need another vacation just thinking about it. But what a wonderful trip it was -- AMAZING accommodations both at Sissinghurst and in London, and not a drop of rain. Will get to the TR maybe over the weekend.

I bought something at Harrods at noon on Sunday and DHL had already tried to deliver it in NorCal on Tuesday morning while I was still in London.

The Rollright trust site has good info on getting to the stones and viewing them, and how to pay the fee (all of a pound!).

Haven't been to them since we lived in Wantage nearly 40 years ago! I have added them to things to see again if we go over in September/October for a reunion in Abingdon. Thanks for reminding me about them!

That is a very good site Hetismij and thank you for the link.

Are you familiar with Traffic’s song:

”Went to see a standing stone
Some in circles, some alone
Ancient, worn and weather torn
They chill me to the very bone

Many of these can be seen
In quiet places, fields of green
Of hedgerow lanes with countless names
But the only thing that remains are the roll right stones”

We visited the Rollright Stones on the way to Moreton in Marsh as part of a day with Cotswolds Exec Cabs. They were great to work with!

The owner is Steve but we went with a terrific gentleman named Mark for a day and had an extraordinary time. You don't have to book a full day with them...You can email Steve to see what arrangement you could work out: [email protected] ; https://cotswoldexecutivecabs.uk/ Steve was very helpful and I though the price was fair.

.
My impression is that you do meticulous research for your journeys so I’m especially glad for this recommendation!
And I re-read that segment of your TR ⭐️

That’s kind. I definitely do research but have definitely been the recipient of great advice here. Sincerely hope you make it to the Rollright Stones. And you can catch all things Rolling Stones at their shop on Carnaby Street! 😉
