Read these trip reports: https://www.fodors.com/community/sea...archid=8171580

Read this: https://www.fodors.com/world/asia/japan

Buy or borrow some guidebooks. Start with the ones with lots of pictures like Insight and DK.

Spend time here: https://www.japan-guide.com/

Then, when you have identified the places that interest you come back and we can help with logistics. We can't tell you what places you should visit when we know nothing about you and you have told us nothing.

Japan is a country with a rich culture and history, and there are many places that are worth visiting. Here are a few recommendations:

Tokyo: As the capital of Japan, Tokyo is a bustling city that is filled with many interesting sights and attractions. Some of the must-see places in Tokyo include the Tokyo Tower, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, and the Tokyo Skytree.

Hokkaido: Located in the northern part of Japan, Hokkaido is known for its beautiful natural landscapes, including mountains, forests, and lakes. Some of the must-see places in Hokkaido include Sapporo, the Shiretoko Peninsula, and Lake Toya.

Osaka: Located in the Kansai region of Japan, Osaka is known for its food and shopping. Some of the must-see places in Osaka include Osaka Castle, Universal Studios Japan, and the Osaka Aquarium.

For summer, realize that the "rainy season" is from about mid June to mid July, but it usually isn't ever daily rain in every place. Its more like "an-increased-chance-of-rain-season". And the O-Bon holiday time is about Aug 10 - 16, so some spots and trains may be crowded then.

But many people don't realize how uncomfortably hot and humid Japan can be in the summer, especially any city or coastal area, all the way till mid September in most places.

So consider spending some time in the more mountainous parts since the elevation and forests make it much more bearable. Days can still be pretty hot in mountain areas, but its less muggy and much more comfortable in the evenings (you'll feel the the cooling effects starting at 300-400 meters in elevation, though a bit higher is better).

Shirakawa, Kiso Valley, Nagano highland areas, Fuji highlands and Hakone, Tateyama in Toyama, northern Okayama/Hiroshima Pref, Iya Valley in Shikoku, Minami-Oguni in Kyushu, and anywhere in Hokkaido. Japan is full of mountains and lots of beautiful small town are everywhere.

I loved every place we visited but Takayama was a highlight for me with it’s beautiful setting, rushing river and size.
