Hello,

I am planning a quick trip to the Great Smoky Mountains with my husband and daughters. The goal is to hike and to photograph the mountains. I dislike shopping and traffic. No interest in Dollywood. After reading a few threads here, it looks like it would be better for me to focus on the North Carolina side of the Great Smoky mountains to avoid traffic.

I am looking for a scenic and quiet Inn for two nights close to good hiking trails.

Do you have any recommendation for either a quaint small town or a countryside area close to the mountains I could focus my search?

I dont' know about quaint, but Bryson City is right near the bottom of it. It's a very small town but there are a few lodging options. In fact, there are quite a few regular chain places there or Cherokee, but if you want something else, here's a nearby B&B

We have stayed at the Folkestone and the nearby (up the road) _Fryemont Inn.. They are both fun and lovely--a hark back to a much older time in the NC mountains.

There are probably just under a jillion threads here about where to stay in the Smokies. Many like Townsend TN. Cherokee is loaded with hotels for its Indian casinos. You could look at Dillsboro or even Culhowee also.

Back when I was on a Groupon thing, cabin rentals in Bryson City would come up and as we are fly fisherpeople, I would look longingly at the ones on a stream. This is one site I found.

We cycled the 10-mile loop around Townsend, TN today and enjoyed the peacefulness and simplicity of the area. Not our first visit, and we're considering a weekend at the Dancing Bear Lodge from which to base a hiking/eating weekend in the near future. The cabins look lovely, and the restaurant menu, even lovelier. The easy access to GSMNP (including Cades Cove) also plays into our consideration.

Hope you will post a quick trip report when you return. I am thinking about a trip up to the Smokies, perhaps for spring, and would be coming from the south/411 HIghway or I-75 so especially interested in the Townsend, TN. No shopping or tourist type places for me either!
