Athens, Naxos, Ios, Santorini - Good food/hidden gems/sights?
Very excited to be headed to Greece for the first time for 10 days with my wife! Accommodation is booked. Overall our itinerary may feel a little rushed but we are comfortable with exploring new places within a short time. While we have read up on the main attractions in each location in guidebooks - we would love to hear your thoughts on places to eat at, local cuisine we should try, off-the-beaten-path gems/sights/experiences at each island.
May 20, 21: Athens:
- Must-try local cuisine or restaurants?
May 22, 23, 24: Naxos
Staying near Ag. Giorgios beach.
- What are some cuisines, restaurants, unique things and shops we should check out?
- Favourite beaches and activities?
May 25, 26: Ios
Ferry from Naxos to Ios. Staying near Yialos beach.
- Favourite beaches, bars, restaurants, activities?
May 27, 28, 29-ish: Santorini
Ferry from Ios to Santorini. Staying in Oia.
- Favourite winery, activities, and restaurants/cuisine?
Thank you!

You can see the restaurants and activities I enjoyed in my trip report, and you can see reviews of the restaurants I mention in that report on TA under the name kja3. The trip report also has a link to a thread about food in greece.

Athens: Check out these: Dinner in the Sky, Aleria, Funky Gourmet , Dio Dekares i Oka, Ta Karamanlidika tou Fani, Scala Vinoteca, Yoleni's. If you are in Monastiraki Square eat a Kebab from Thanasis.
In the wider area of Athens check Klimataria, Palia Fava, Pinaleon, Diporto, Vourliotina, Karavitis.
For drinks check out : Brettos, The Clumsies, A for Athens, 360, MoMix Molecular Mixology Kerameikos, Faust, Couleur Locale
Naxos: - What are some cuisines, restaurants, unique things and shops we should check out?
You could try Yasouvlaki for gyros. Also good for fast food: Piperi: m...eating point, Patatas, Pizzadelia, Το Ελληνικό (To Elliniko= The Greek (noun) ), Jack pot. The best tavern I found in Naxos town is named Apostolis, I went there every day during my vacation. Check out the bar called Swing for your night out. Mojo is also nice for a night out with great views. Check out Κάγκανης (Kaganis). It makes delicious pastries and bread. Fresh and tasty products, great sandwiches as well. Fantastic donuts too!!! A tavern called Μάρω (Maro) is also great, you have to get there early.. preferred by many visitors. For sea food check Μεζέ-Μεζέ (Meze-Meze). Ginger is more upscale.. If you get to the village Filloti check out Πλάτανος (Platanos=means plane tree) or get to Απολλωνας (Apollonas) for great fish. If you get to Koronos village try out the tavern called Ματίνα (Matina) very famous and traditional.
Some traditional ethnic dishes you ought to treat yourself with; if you are into meat that is, are the wine stewed chicken “rosto” and the stuffed lamb “patudo”. Apart from the traditional gastronomy, Naxos offers unique dishes of sea foods and plenty of choices on Italian cuisine and winery. Naxos is also famous for its cheese choices, with “arseniko” being one of the most distinct in flavour. Cooked in a small frying pan with the traditional recipe called "saganaki" will be the perfect bite, that will go perfectly with your wine or ouzo. Traditional home-style cooking prepared with local ingredients is the clue. Do try dishes with fish, freshly delivered straight from the island's boats. The potatoes of Naxos are famous, and so are its dairy products which are consumed throughout Greece.
- Favourite beaches and activities?
The south-west-facing coast of Naxos has the longest beaches in the Cyclades! The sand derives from marble or granite, so it’s uncharacteristically bright and white for Greece. My favorites are the far end of Plaka, and hidden coves around Kouroupia headland with its juniper groves... Also check out Parthena Beach, Mikri Vigla, Kastraki.

Santorini: Metaxi Mas Restaurant has fantastic food and a lovely view overlooking Kamari Beach. Go to Amoudi Bay below Oia for lunch on the wharf at one of the fish tavernas. I prefer Taverna Katina's or Dimitris-Ammoudi Taverna.
