Driving New Orleans to Dallas?

Following a cruise out of Gavelston in December 2017 we will drive to New Orleans for a few days there and then drive to Dallas to visit with family before returning home.

Is there a route to drive from New Orleans to Dallas that would include some scenic areas or interesting towns or cities?

How much time are you devoting to the drive?

What's interesting to you?

Houston to NOLA is a straight shot on I-10. Dallas is north of I-20, so you have to go to the northern end of Louisiana via I-49 or drive to Houston and go up I-45 to Dallas.

If you're trying to do the drive in a day, there's no point to sidetracking because it's a 7.5 hour shot and you might as well get done with it. If you must sidetrack, go to the River Road either between NOLA and Baton Rouge or north of Baton Rouge and visit some plantations or battlefields or Louisiana's very good Angola Prison Museum at the maximum security prison (no, you don't mingle with the residents) or similar.
