Wilmington/Wrightsville NC Winter Retreat!

Husband and I (63 and 68) are thinking of escaping the cold in Ohio (Cincinnati) in a matter of days by driving toward a coastal area. Considering Wilmington/Wrightsville - had read most spring breakers tend to head further south which I hope is the case. We like hiking, visiting touristy areas to walk around, unique sites, nature sites. As far as lodging, was considering Best Western Plus in Wilmington or TownePlace Suites by Marriott also in Wilmington if you have any input on these or other options. Would prefer spending around $100 nightly for lodging. Also WHICH area do you think we'd prefer lodging-wise - Wilmington or Wrightsville? Thank you in advance.

I don't think you'll find spring break now.
You might take a look at Pawley's Island/Litchfield. The Litchfield Inn is right ON the beach and right now I'd suspect there are good rate specials. Also look at Litchfield Beach and Golf Resort.
It's an easy drive from Cincy and maybe no further than Wilmington (it's an hour and a half south of Wilmington.
I think there is a bit more to do in the Pawley's area--nature included.
Brookgreen Gardens. GREAT food.

I'd head up to the OBX for those unique and nature sites.

I stay here when I go to Wrightsville: http://www.thesurfsuites.com

But there's nothing to do on Wrightsville except beach things. Wilmington has some interesting houses, and you might check the dates for the Azalea Festival.

Wilmington also has the battleship North Carolina which has a teak deck.

As I read they are coming down right now. We just returned from the beach (Litchfield). 65* days and beautiful weather.
Really--take a look at the places I suggested.
From Cincy you can be there in about 9 hours. I'm originally from Troy--just north--went to Miami.

I'd stay on Wrightsville Beach and enjoy the ocean views then head for Wilmington for some dining, museums, etc. We did that often when DS was at UNCW. They are really quite close.

I agree with emalloy. I like to walk the beach in the early morning or evening. There are a handful of restaurants. But then we drive to Wilmington to window shop or dine.

Gretchen - have heard of Troy and grew up with a member of a family named Kennedy who moved to Cincy. Thanks so much for your info and everyone else's!!! As it turns out, last May, we drove down to Beaufort and made our way up the coast stopping a few times for overnites all the way up to Myrtle Beach - very enjoyable.
