Short-term US health insurance for American who's been living abroad

Greetings..

I'm heading back to the US for a six week visit after living abroad for over four years and I'm looking for advice on short-term health insurance providers to replace World Nomads while I'm in the States.

Just something to provide catastrophic coverage in the event of something serious while I'm on US soil. We're off to South America around Labor Day and will resume with WN when we hit the road again. Thanks!

I was going to suggest asking this on the US board, but it occurred to me that US residents just don't buy short term insurance, we buy a year at a time. So, you will likely get better answers on the Europe and Australia boards, for instance, where you are more likely to find people who need short term US coverage.

Can't you just get a temporary rider on the WN insurance?

Can't you just buy travel insurance that covers the US in whichever country you are currently in?
I assume TravelNomads doesn't cover your home country.

Yeah, it's entirely possible to buy short term insurance. My brother just bought a 2 month policy while he was between jobs. COBRA is terribly expensive and he paid about $150 for the policy. Just call major carriers (Cigna, Blue Cross, etc) and they'll give you a quote.

Thanks, all. WN specifically excludes one's host country, so they don't offer coverage riders in the US for me.

Thanks, all. Pretty much what I'd learned online. Cheers, and happy travels.

Can you tell us what you wind up doing? Might be useful for others.
