We are planning to be in London for 3 nights in June after a self drive tour of Ireland so are looking for an affordable place (under 200 a night) to stay. Any advice or experiences? Thanks.

We like to stay at the Holiday Inn Kensington. It should be in your price range. It is in a great location, very near the Tube, and you can walk to many museum, about 5 min. (V&A, Natural History, etc.) There are many places to eat nearby and even a grocery store. The Holdiay Inn Kensington Forum is a around the corner, but it caters more to business clients. I have stayed at both and like the Kensington better. They also both offer breakfast, which is a great way to start the day. See if you can get breakfast included with your room.

A suggestion would be to look into renting a flat for a short stay. For the price, it can't be beat and would give you more space to boot!!! That's what we (2 of us) are doing for a trip the end of May!

They offer a wide range of flats all over London in 3 price catagories, so, there is something for everyone's budget!!!! Many of the places have a minimum one night stay! I have stayed in The Mansions in Earls Court through them!

Well $200 is only a little more than £100 an if you are talking about 4 people then you need either a quad (hard ot find in London) or two doubles which means only £50 per night per room in June and that will be tough. I think the Country Inn or Country Hall (not sure of the name) near the London Eye has quad rooms and is pretty cheap. I know it gets mentioned here all the time.

I can recommend the Craven Gardens Hotel in Bayswater. It's one of the cheapest hotels in London that's still decent but it was £39 pounds for a single in March and the prices go up for doubles and for summer so probably more than £50 a night. But after four trips to London it's the best place I've found in my tight price range and it's where I'll stay the next time I'm there.

Do a search here on "cheap hotels in London". There have been several threads on the subject. It's a toughie.

We stayed in Bloomsbury at the St Athans. The best way to describe is a 'Family Hostel'. A triple with breakfast was 60 pounds per night (total not per person). Small room, no TV in room, bathroom on the stairway landing.

Many people use priceline for hotel rooms in London .

If you mean $200 total for the 4 of you - then the HI Kensington mentioned above definitely won't be in your price range.

You are only talking about a bit over £110 and that is not much for a quad and really not much for 2 rooms.

priceline is an option if you are talking about 4 adults - but you can only book doubles. There is always the off chance that two identical bids could net you two different hotels. Not a huge risk for 2 couples. But if you are a family w/ kids that really isn't an option.

A modest 1 bdrm flat w/ a sofabed can be found in the £100 or less range.

try E&E Apartments http://eandeapartments.co.uk/ phone 011-44-171-828-0453. Moderately priced 1 and 2 bedroom flats in Pimlico and Victoria for about £90-£110 w/ a three night minimum. Near the Thames, Tate Britain, Chelsea and Victoria Station.

County Hall Travel Inn mentioned above will not allow 4 adults to share a room - but if you are 2 adults and a couple of children you can try there too. But it is very popular and is often totally booked up.

On Priceline, you could bid for the two rooms in a single bid. Then you will get the two rooms in the same hotel, without question. However, all of the charges will be on one credit card, which is fine if you trust your companions.

I checked, HI Kensington is 97 pounds/night for a quad in the middle of June. Just thought I'd let you know.

I just got the Thistle Marble Arch on Priceline for $88 plus about $18 taxes at the end of June. (Higher than $60 plus taxes in Feb.) We got 2 rooms for 4 people (you could make a bid for 2 rooms). Total for 2 rooms for 2 nights was $425.28.
