Help us pick a beautiful small town between Milan & Rome

Dear Fodors friends,

My wife and I are in our late 30s and will be spending 10 days in Italy, flying into Milan (need to be there for 2 days for a conference) and out of Rome. We are hoping to spend 2 days in Milan and 4-5 days in Rome but want to pick one other spot for the remaining 3 days. We are traveling in late June 2018 and are looking for a beautiful smaller town, preferably on a nice beach, to take a break between Milan and Rome. Ideally, we'd prefer not rent a car and use trains to travel around. Our budget is flexible and we are looking more for authentic experiences (beautiful food, culture and sights) more than anything else. (Also, we can get our fill of museums and more touristy sites in Rome!)

We appreciate any suggestions that the community might have to help us find a good small town between Milan and Rome (and preferably on the water with a nice beach).

Thank you!

There are tons of beach towns along the Milan - Genoa - Rome itinerary.
Some people like Lerici, close to La Spezia.
From Viareggio, you could visit Pisa, Lucca and Florence.
You may also check Elba Island and Giglio Island (frequent ferries).
From Tarquinia/Lido di Tarquinia you can visit Estruscan necropolis and museums.

If you turn off the beach element you might think Bergamo (old town) is a lovely place to visit.

Viareggio is a favorite of my friends - classical seaside resort. Trains go everywhere - for lots on trains check Acquista il biglietto con le nostre offerte - Trenitalia and www.italotreno.com - two competing rail companies using same tracks and same stations. Book long-distance trains ASAP because discounted tickets are available but often sell out weeks early. 赛恩特幼儿园设备有限公司 has loads on doing that yourself - www,budgeteuropeetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com also have lots on trains and where to go by them.

Rapallo (from which you can also visit Santa Margherita, Camogli, Portofino and the CT towns if you wish - or just stay in Rapallo.

But if you decide you don't need the beach I'd suggest Bergamo or Pavia

Pal meant to send you to https://www.seat61.com/ for train info
