My recommendation - please, eat well! Not fast food and alcohol. Try to eat healthily. A lot of water, vitamins.

First and foremost, I wash my hands when I've been out and about handling souvenirs etc, getting ready to eat, or after handling a lot of money, and I don't touch my face unless I have clean hands. Where the water is questionable, I spring for bottled. You can't do much about the air if somebody near you is sick, but you can always practice good hygiene. When I go in restrooms, I'm alarmed at the number of people who don't wash their hands after using the bathroom.

I always start with the airplane: disinfect the tray table and any plastic around my seat area, use hand sanitizer and saline nasal spray throughout the flight. I used to get very sick after every flight but since incorporating these measures into my routine I have not been sick once. We will be taking eleven flights in the next three weeks during our trip to Africa so my theory will really be tested. I also use hand sanitizer generously throughout the day. We take along three different antibiotics just in case something crops up: clindamyacin for teeth issues, zpac for respiratory and cipro for stomach issues.

3. consider advice offered in reputable guidebooks.
4: Ignore on-line advice.

1. Bring some disinfectant wipes to clean the arms and tray tables in your row on the plane. They are filthy.
2. Wash your hands or use alcohol gel to clean them.
3. Follow food safety rules especially in non-safe potable water countries. Don't let them put ice in your drink.
4. Get plenty of rest and try to minimize stress. Have fun.

Drink plenty of water. I guess. I don't get sick much when I'm at home either. Don't eat greasy fast food. Use wet wipes. Most of my problems end up being my feet because I tend to do overnight hikes and camping. Not really what you're looking for here, eh?

You are used to your own local water microbes so drink bottled water. Drink more wine.

I always carry a Packed water Bottle with me so that i don't need to drink from anywhere. Because water is major reason to get ill. I also avoid street food and if need arise then definitely look out for subway.
