One day in Copenhagen

One day in Copenhagen
This May, my wife and I will arrive mid-morning on a Monday in Copenhagen by ship, and fly out that night at 2200.
We'd love to get an overview of the city highlights during the day, but be able to get to the airport by around 1900-2000.
I'd appreciate some recommendations for how best to spend the day. Do you know of top guides or tour companies to whom we could turn, or a DIY tour if that's a good option? If anyone has a particular favorite sight to advise, so much the better. I'd like to hear it.
Also, any recommendations for how best to stow our luggage during the day?
Thanks in advance for your input.

Thanks, Trophy wife! Lots to see and do right in the old town. We're thinking of doing either a walking tour, or the HoHo bus, as well as a Netto canal and harbor cruise (depending on the weather). Any experience or opinions to share?

This sounds right up your alley and then you can start your Copenhagen day visiting the nearby Little Mermaid neat the Cruise Ship Terminal I believe.

Well, we did spend a lovely day in Copenhagen at the end of our cruise.
The Regal Princess dock is at Oceankaj, which is pretty far from downtown (almost, but not quite, in Sweden, LOL). We shared a taxi from the ship to the Central Train Station with our friends, costing about $46 for four of us. After bidding our friends farewell, my wife and I used two lockers for our luggage, one costing 65 Krone (about $10), the other 75 Krone (about $12), for the day. The station has great luggage storage facilities on its lower level. The lockers have digital controls and take credit cards (chip, with no PIN needed).
We sought out the tourist information office near the train station, where we purchased tickets for the Red Hop-On/Hop-Off Bus, including a one-hour canal and harbor cruise on the Netto Line. The cruise was not hop-on/hop-off, by the way. These hit most of the sights that were recommended above. We spent some time going back in time in Christiania, saw the Little Mermaid amidst mobs of other tourists, had a leisurely meal outdoors in Nyhaven, walked through some gardens and the outsides of some palaces. There was nowhere near enough time to see everything. Several streets and parts of the bus route were closed due to a run that day celebrating the crown-prince's 50th birthday. After a confusing and stressful boarding process at the train station, we made it to the airport by 7:00 PM, a time recommended to us at the tourist information office for our 10 PM flight on Ryanair.
Thanks to all of you who generously contributed your suggestions and advice!
