Corsica ... should we stay in Calvi or Bastia?
We're planning a stay in Corsica this summer and would appreciate opinions on which coastal area might be preferable ... Calvi or Bastia. Either has an airport to fly into thru Nice, but we'd like some feedback on which locale to stay in. We will be there one week - mid June; prefer great food, small cafe's, beaches, sunshine, quiet, people watching, local markets and shops, and slow lane speed for travel.
We'd depart Corsica in route to Avignon, but again either locale has an airport to make this happen. We will not take the ferry from the mainland over to Corsica.
Thanks ... Dorm

Firstly, I'll say that my time in both Bastia and Calvi was brief (a couple of days each). In my memories, Bastia is a working town while Calvi has more of a holiday town feel - that's an oversimplification though. I thought Calvi more attractive. The water near Calvi (at least where we were) is very shallow and thus warm. The train runs along the coast from Calvi, with some great scenery enroute, and also south inland. Personally, I'd choose Calvi. btw we were there in late September and I have read that it can be busy during the holidays.
