Some major sites in the US will close - Yosemite, Grand Canyon, & all national parks. We got caught in this in 2013. We were told we would be evacuated from our hotel the day the shutdown occurred - but the shutdown was averted at the last minute.

Excellent post, Stu, it's important for travelers to be particularly aware of this. When the government shut down in the oughts, our trip to Hawaii had to be adjusted because most of Maui is a national park and was therefore inaccessible. So was the Pearl Harbor Memorial.

OMB is floating the notion that parks and monuments would stay open (to the extent possible) during a Gov't shutdown without non essential staff present. Hopefully it won't be an issue travelers have to face.

I fully support the Democrats in congress, and some Republicans no doubt, that believe being bullied into not passing a solution for DACA and children's health is unacceptable and the solutions more important in the big picture than vacation plans.

The plan currently being pushed would include funding for CHPlus for the next six years. While it does not contain a DACA resolution, I would urge Democrats to pass this plan. DACA can be dealt with in the next go around in four weeks but re-authorizing CHPlus is urgent. States are running out of money and families that rely on CHPlus are facing unnecessary anxiety and uncertainty.

The Republicans cannot pass it on their own in the Senate. They need some Democratic support.

tom42, I agree with you. Both groups need the legislation, both Parties want to pass legislation, but shouldn't nine million children and 370,000 pregnanat women count more than 800,000 DACA recipients? The answer of course is "yes", but it's all about political leverage. It's never, ever about what the country needs.
It's almost certain that there will be a shut down. If I had to vote, I'm not sure what I'd do.

I don't know if I would frame it as who counts more. I would frame it more as who needs something enacted more urgently. In this case, it's the families that rely on CHPlus. It's already insane that it's now January and the government still hasn't re-authorized the program, which lapsed last fall. The DACA recipients, on the other hand, have a little more time. The program doesn't officially end until March.

Yes I agree. But if they can't agree on DACA, they should move forward. Sometimes you can't get everything you want exactly when you want it. They still have time to reach a deal on DACA.

Because I don't want to see this thread shut down, which it will be, even though it contains good information. How about we try to police ourselves, eh? You guys have a whole board for these kinds of discussions.

" most of Maui is a national park"
No, it's not.

Let's recap. You want this discussion moved to the sequestered lounge in which much of us are denied entry, meanwhile you are offering inacurate information with authority about an island you''ve never visited.
Fair enough.
