So in from roughly February 3rd until March 3rd I have free time to travel, leaving from London.

I was looking at spending a month volunteering at an animal rescue center in Costa Rica however I am a student and can not afford the near £1000 return flights.

I doubt I will ever get a whole month off like this ever again therefore I want to make the most of it.

Any ideas on where to go/what to do? Preferably I'd be looking more towards South America.

BA and LATAM usually have sales on in early December. I have managed to get return flights around the £500-550 mark to Lima and Quito in the last few years. Travel food and accomodation is cheap there. Feb is rainy season in the Andes so do google the weather.

I would look at a combo of Peru and Bolivia. Happy to answer any specifics over on the South America forum

Have no ideas for you as I haven't traveled much myself but try posting in the other forums...like different areas...Caribbean, South America etc. Have fun!

There are several islands in the Caribbean that have been hit by huricaines that need all the volunteer help they can get including animal rescue.
