3 nights in Madrid which area

Metro line 8 from Nuevos Ministerios runs out to the airport, but you can easily connect to it from several different lines, so you can stay just about anywhere in the central part of the city and be at the airport in under an hour.
We prefer the Retiro and Salamanca neighborhoods, but normally take a taxi to the airport (less then 25 minutes to T4).

I sure wouldn't call Plaza Mayor a quiet neighborhood, but maybe that's just me.
I did stay in a quiet location right in the center, at the Hotel Intur Palacio San Martin, and it is very convenient to a couple metro stops (and you can walk to Plaza Mayor ifyou want). It's on plaza de San Martin which isn't on a major street and set back, it was pretty quiet. On top of that, they have some rooms which dont' even have an outer window, they look onto the interior atrium of the hotel, and I like those. Those are really quiet (no bar or noisy stuff in it). Some people don't like not having a window to the outside, but it doesn't bother me as I'm mainly there at night anyway.
If you do get a window to the outside, it is next to a street with people walking up and down to get to some main points and probably talking, but it isn't on a busy traffic street.
