Places in FLA similar to Sanibel
We are in Sanibel right now and, for the most part, are really liking it because it has opportunities for many things we enjoy. We like all the biking, the lack of high rises, the many natural areas and sanctuaries, and the opportunity to access the bay and mangrove areas via kayak. And, this is all within in reach of some good, more upscale, local grocery stores. Since we are also looking around for places to stay on future extended winter trips, I want to know if anyone knows of other places/areas that are similar. We are not just looking for the beaches; we are looking for more varied opportunities such as Sanibel has.
Thanks in advance.

Crystal River and Homosassa are nice little spots, I have not been in the winter. Steinhatchee is a nice spot as well, a little more rural.
Mt Dora and Clermont are nice little towns but not near water.

I would consider the area between Melbourne Beach, Sebastian Inlet and Vero. No high rises, some shopping, good restaurants, nature areas. I wouldn't say it's exactly like Sanibel, but it has some of what you are looking for.
