drive from san diego to las vegas via mojave nat'l preserve

i've driven I-15 many, many times. it has been recommended to me that we take a bit more time (1 extra hr driving time - is that correct) and from vegas, go through the mohave national preserve. we are travelling in july so obviously won't be doing much outdoor activities. any recommendations on (1) is this route worth it beauty wise if we are doing most of it from inside the vehicle (2) places we should definitly stop/view points/restaurant and (3) the maps i've found on line are very vague re hwy numbers. can anyone tell me their favorite route keeping in mind we don't want to add on more then an hour or two to what I-15 would take us. thanks. any info is appreciated. i know it will be bloody hot but we'll have ac in the car and i do appreciate seening different scenary. thanks.

This drive is very scenic, and we take it every chance we get.

Going north from Twentynine Palms we go Amboy, Kelso Depot (where there is a visitor center), Cima, Wheaton Springs, Las Vegas.

When we aren't in a rush, rather than drive directly to Twentynine Palms, we take the routing Julian, Borrego Springs, and then we drive through Joshua Tree National Park and on to Amboy and north.

Go to www.randmcnally.com select "shortest route" from 29Palms to Las Vegas. It will give you step by step driving directions and a map.

Note there are no services past 29Palms to the Nevada border going that way.

There are detailed maps of the preserve itself , including points of interest, on their web page.
