I will be traveling to San Diego in mid September. Someone told me I will need long sleeves at night. Is this true? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Either long sleeves or a light jacket. It won't be cold, but probably too chilly for just short sleeves.

Weather is un-predictable. CA along the coast, which SD is, I would have long sleeves and maybe a lightweight sweater for the evening. I've been in San Diego maybe 4 times in September, and I think 2 were very summerlike and very warm. The other 2 were a little fall like and mild temps. Check the averages on weather.com and maybe a couple of the natives will pipe in.

Sept/Oct are the BEST times to visit, very sunny and dry and most summer crowds are gone. Depending on where you will be, most people need a light jacket in the evening almost year 'round.
