Effective solutions to these animal-human conflicts are never “simple”. I was watching a program the other night that described a culling of elephants in Kruger in the 1980’s. In this culling, the male orphans of the culled elephants were transported to one of the smaller game reserves in South Africa. Twenty some years later it seems these orphaned males had grown up in their new reserve without any bigger males around them to “keep the teenagers in line.” This resulted in these young bulls going into musth much earlier that normal and while in this state they were killing rhinos. The solution in this case was to try to re-locate some older big bulls from Kruger to this reserve to keep the teenagers in line.

I read about elephant juvenille delinquents in a magazine.

The complexity of elephant society never ceases to amaze me.

And some people question why fathers are needed in (human) families.

What a shame that leaving the park means death for eles.

GreenDrake: that is an interesting article. At Madikwe our guide mentioned that when they stocked the reserve they brought in big tuskers from Kruger for that very reason, to keep the young males from getting out of hand.

hi the young eles got out of control because they witnessed their families getting murdered.who wouldnt lose it or be a menace after watching your mom, dad, sisters, brothers, cousins rounded up by the the police or army and blown away. then they walk over them shooting them again to make sure they are dead.
i've seen this footage of that culling yrs ago-nasty disgusting crap!makes me wonder who the real menace is.dont have to think twice its not the eles.
