First Aloha and now ATA - I think that the cost to go from the US mainland to Hawaii will be going up soon.

Not necessarily. Hawaii is a leisure market, and when the economy sours, people pull back from leisure trips.

There are still plenty of capacity on various airlines to Hawaii, and if prices go too high, people stop flying. Again, because it's a leisure market - vacationers will go somewhere else.

I live in LA, so our local news was full of this early this morning and all day as well.

Most people when interviewed just smile and said..oh well...our vacation is ruined and we have lost all our money...la la!!!! I saved for 2 years but oh well......

GAD.....just when do we get mad? When do we demand this stuff stops...when do we demand that Bill of Rights?

Sorry....it's the 60's activist kicking in again! sigh!!!

You can't have low fares and guarantees at the same time. If you want to pay the same fares you paid (in constant dollars) in 1970, you won't have to worry about airlines going bankrupt.

There wasn't plenty of availability when I tried to book flights from LAXHNL this past week. There wasn't much accommodation left to book either.

Not this week, when there are lots of passengers stranded by Aloha and ATA.

But if you have 2 weeks in advance, UA is back to under $500 starting 4/19. NW is $407 for 4/21, CO is $332 for 4/23. Outbound dates, assuming staying for a week.

What are you going to protest, LEANNA? This is the "invisible hand" at work.

I guess the only protest that would work for anything these days...is don't buy it! If enough of us did that...then prices would drop on everything.

As for the airline low prices....you know years ago I paid about $250 to fly round trip to Hawaii from LA. I mean way back in the 80s.....seems to me that its just as cheap/expensive now. Just depends on how you look at it...but we thought that was a great price then...even in 1980 $$.

I don't feel Im getting that good of rates on any airline for all the fuss and worry that I have to put w/ now. I mean when I can fly for $50 then hey....they can charge me for as many extras as they want....but I dont see that happening!
