Bangkok with teens

I will be in Thailand for two weeks in March with my three children (11, 14, 16) and plan to spend a few days in Bangkok at the beginning. I would love some hotel suggestions (as well as some activities (floating market, klong tour, cooking class, others????). We are traveling with another family and given the anticipated jetlag, we are hoping for nice accommodations with pool facilities. Thanks so much!

For families with children, the usual recommendation here is the Anantara Riverside. A nice property, right on the river, with a lovely pool (very important in hot Bangkok!)

Visit a few of the most famous wats: The Grand Palace with it's Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Wat Po, Wat Arun. All of these are in an area next to the river. The wats are stunning.

A klong tour is a good idea, but I find the floating markets to be so touristy, I don't recommend them. But your kids might like them.

You haven't told us where else you are going in Thailand. While I think a cooking class id a fine idea, I'd do it elsewhere rather than in Bangkok.

I have stayed at a lot of different places in Bangkok, over the last nineteen years, and love the Anantara Baan Rajaprasong and this neighborhood. It's less than a 3-minute walk to the Rajadamri BTS skytrain station as the skytrain station is at the end of the street and it's very central to getting to various areas of Bangkok aside from the river area. It's on a very quiet side street and the pool area is really nice and the rooms (apartments) are very spacious. The 1 bedrooms are a minimum of 77 square meters and there are also 2 bedroom accommodations. Space!

The location is less than a 15-minute walk from the famous, Erawan shrine where there is always a lot of activity and which is also in the heart of the city.

On the above skytrain map, Rajadamri BTS station is at S1 and the river is south of it at the Saphan Taksin (S6) stop. It only takes about 15 minutes to get to that stop.

If you want to go to the famous, Chatchuchat weekend market, then you only need to go one stop to Siam station and then change and go north to Mo Chit (N8) and you're there. Plus, if you want to go to the Sukhumvit area, from this neighborhood, then it's really easy on the skytrain.

It's about impossible to get lost taking the skytrain as there are basically only two lines; east/west or north/south.

Happy Travels!

The Red Cross has a fascinating snake farm, along with a daily show. It may sound icky to you, but I learned so much about the work they are doing in creating antigens. The teens will enjoy it, and if you are grossed out, you can sit in the back row during the show.

I also like the Chinatown area in Bangkok. The food there is good, and it's fun to browse in the jewelry stores.

If you have time for a day trip, hire a driver with a mini van to take all of you to Kanchanaburi. There is an interesting museum there about the WWII history (sad), and the scenery is gorgeous.

Funny you mentioned the snake farm as just on Saturday, my Thai friends and I were in a taxi headed from just having had lunch in Silom to going to Paragon Mall to go to the optometrist and passed the snake farm and were talking and laughing about it. They were mentioning that one can have the snakes wrapped on them. I would definitely pass out. LOL!

What do your children want to see? Get them involved in the planning, it's much better than just telling them what they WILL do.

But here's a few ideas from me...

- Siam Oceanworld, especially if you want to escape the heat for 2 or 3 hours. Look out for discounted tickets...

http://www.sealifebangkok.com/en/

- Escape the hustle and bustle to Lumphini Park, and enjoy a bit of oxygen...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lumphini_Park

- A trip up the river from Central Pier to Nonthaburi on an Orange Flag public ferry. Cheap as chips [15 baht a ticket all the way, takes just over an hour], passing lots of sights that can only be seen from the river...

http://bangkokforvisitors.com/essent...press-boat.php

- A train trip on a 3rd Class train to Kanchanaburi [Bridge over the River Kwai], and mix with the locals. A trip on a Thai train is an authentic Thai experience. You'll be best off staying overnight [or 2 nights] in Kanchanaburi and take in all the atractions including the Thai-Burma Railway Museum, Don Rak Commonwealth War Cemetery, Hellfire Pass, and the Death Railway between Kanchanaburi and Nam Tok.

https://www.seat61.com/Bridge-on-the-River-Kwai.htm

You can visit Kanchanburi on a l-o-n-g day trip by road, but there's a lot of time on the road through boring flat industrial scenery, and time at each stop will be limited. That's usually mind numbing stuff for active children.

An evening out along Khao San Road and the Banglamphu area. A lot of people stick their nose up at the thought, but it really is a vibrant area after dark.

Your kids can check out the monitor lizards in Lumpini Park. The park is very near this building (Anantara Baan Rajaprasong).

I also agree with Siam Oceanworld. I first went there the first year that it opened and loved it. I rode around in a glass-bottom boat in one part of it. Cool!!. It's at the Siam skytrain stop which is only 1, skytrain stop from the Rajadamri BTS skytrain station here.

That above Siam2night link is great. I didn't know that Bruno Mars is coming to Bangkok in April 2018. I just saw him at home, in L.A., last month as he ended his tour in L.A. to 4, sold-out nights and I went on the very last night. Beyond amazing. It was like one, big dance party. He's from Hawaii. I wish I could see him here in Bangkok. Smiles.

Happy Travels!

this site has a load of stuff to keep kids active and occupied without seeming too "baby-ish" for teenagers.

There's ice skating at Central World Mall, a 15-minute walk from here. I used to go in there and get a kick out of watching families ice skate together, from adults to small kids.

There's not as many monitor lizards in Lumphini as there used to be...

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YYl8nbXzVgw

The rest of the wildlife there can sleep a little easier.

oh my goodness I just logged on and saw all these responses!! thank you everyone -- great idea to get the kids planning -- once we have our accommodation sorted out and a few ideas, I will put them to work!

Slightly off topic -- has anyone stayed at Our Jungle House in Khao Sok? I am very intrigued by this!

As for the monitor lizards in Lumpini Park, I also saw a video a couple years ago, about the efforts of them being removed from the park. It's not a park to go and sit on a blanket and have a picnic in. LOL! Smiles. But, in Jan 2016, they did hold the big, elephant parade exhibit there (artificial elephants painted by different artists) although I saw that same exhibit at Asiatique in Bangkok.

Happy Travels!
