Your 3YO won't won't give a hoot for what city you visit, won't have any lasting memories of the trip and for the most part you'll be your child's main source of "entertainment".

What kind of activities interest you and what do you think your child would enjoy? How much time do you have for this visit? Do you have any budget restraints?

Sydney has a very nice zoo that your 3YO might enjoy but be warned it's built on a hillside so there's lots of up/down walking (but you can start at the top and work your way downhill).

Start here
http://www.australia.com/en

Work out what interests you, fits with your budget & tom available.

Come back when you have some ideas.

The Sunshine Coast is good for families, close to Australia Zoo, beaches & easy to get around in a rental car. It will be warmer than places in th south.

What about some time on the Gold Coast then? It is very touristy but there's a lot do in one location. Sea World is a great theme park for small kids as they can enjoy it all. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is worth a visit and also the Lamington National Park and O'Reilly's Rainforest retreat with all the birds.
As others say the little one won't really care where they are!
