Our experiences at Heathrow in the last few months have been surprisingly good. We have been through Heathrow terminal 3 and 5 MANY times this year (probably over 10 times) and have found security on the way out to be smooth and passport control coming back in quite quick. We do get to go through the UK passport control though so I can't speak to the non-UK passport control queues. Luggage collection has been much better than previously.
I think as long as you know you may get caught up like some others above, and are flexible, there are no reasons not to enjoy a pint and a bit of museum time in London!

The only fly in the ointment I see is AFAIK air New Zealand uses T2. So the off airport hotels along be Bath Rd would probably be faster/more convenient (and a hecka lot cheaper) than the Sofitel in T5.
