DFW airport
Hi All,
It looks like we can save a bundle by taking a flight that has an very long lay over in DFW. We'll arrive via an international flight at 6:50pm and depart the following day at 7:25am.
The flight is on AA.
Is there an in-airport lounge that we can buy into or a very inexpensive nearby that has a shuttle service that we could use?
Thanks ahead.

The Super 8 in Irving is 5 miles from the airport but has a shuttle, and is surprising nice for a Super 8. Book the "airport north" motel because the "south" location is a dump and has no shuttle.
Also avoid the Quality Inn and the Days Inn. Comfort Inn Airport is a good choice if you can get an AAA or Senior discount.

American Airlines Admirals Club (located in Terminals A, B, C & D) offer day passes (I think it's $50/person).
There's also the American Express Centurion Club located in Terminal D. Access is complementary if you are a Platinum card holder otherwise there's a $50/day/person fee.
"The Club Air Port Lounge" company operates a lounge in Terminal D. It's available on a daily fee basis (http://www.theclubairportlounges.com/club-DFW.html). I think their rate is $40/day/pp.
Lufthansa, British Air, KAL and Qantas have lounges in Terminal D - You'll have to check to see if they offer day passes.
Delta and United have lounges in Terminal E. Again, you'll have to check to see if they offer day passes.
NOTE: All terminals are connected inside the secure area by the SkyLink Tram which runs every 3 minutes so getting between terminals is quick and easy - no more than 15 minutes between the furthest l points.
Most major hotel chains have hotels/motels within a few miles of the airport and most offer shuttle service. Whether or not the individual room rates fit your budget will depend on your definition of "inexpensive".
FYI - The Grand Hyatt (a full service hotel) is located right in Terminal D just steps from the TSA checkpoint. We stay there once or twice a year - very comfortable but it probably won't meet your definition of inexpensive. There's also a (less expensive) Hyatt Regency on Airport property which has free shuttle service to all the terminals.

Oh, I meant to point out there are lots of very nice shops and restaurants in Terminal D (the international Terminal where you'll probably arrive) and some decent shops and restaurants in the other terminals. Go here for lots of information: https://www.dfwairport.com

Perfect. The in airport lounges sound like they may work depending on how the logistics of retrieving ones luggage and customs works out. I'll check the links out.
Good also to know that we can catch a room at an inexpensive hotel if that doesn't work out.

Looks like plan A & B from above won't work as we wanted a lounge where we could sleep overnight. All the lounges that I found close at night.
Also the Comfort Inn shuttle only runs from 7am - 11pm. The arrival time is ok but the departure time is too late.
I can't tell what time the other shuttles operate. Does anyone know?

It depends on the hotel but some run 24/7. You have to check with each hotel to be sure of shuttle times.
With a 7:25AM departure you'll need to be back at the airport by about 6:00AM so that means leaving your (off airport) hotel even earlier as shuttles at that hour usually run every 30 minutes or so and you'll have to allow 15 to 30 minutes travel time.
You might want to "bite the bullet" and opt for convenience over price and stay at either the Grand Hyatt or the Hyatt Regency at the airport. They are both very convenient and you can just about roll out of bed and be at the ticket counter or TSA checkpoint within a few minutes of leaving the hotel(s).
As I mentioned, we stay at the Grand Hyatt a couple of times a year and usually have early morning flights. We are usually through TSA and at our gate within 30 to 40 minutes of our wake-up call.

This place gets good reviews and the shuttle runs 24hrs (I called and asked):

Also Residence Inn Irving/DFW South has some $89 rates on booking.com sometimes, their shuttle runs around the clock as well.

Big Russ,
That makes sense. The last time I used a sleep lounge was prior to TSA. I'm actually not sure, though how the luggage situation would work in our situation.
I'm now led to wonder what will happen to our luggage with such a huge layover. Arrive 6:50pm internationally to DFW and fly out the next morning at 7:30am to Boston.
Does one need to claim luggage at the first international airport or will it move on and need to be claimed at the second airport.
I remember having an issue with this once when we were flying to Africa. No one seemed to know. Some of our luggage moved on and some didn't. The luggage that moved on was ok the rest was delivered to us months later, post trip.

Be sure that if you book a hotel off site, that you can cancel and be sure what the policy is. We had a long layover in Spain a couple of years ago, our planes were dreadfully late and our hotel room off property was already paid for. We paid a bunch of money to barely sleep for 3 hours until we had to get the shuttle back to the airport for our next flight.

I think I answered my own question. The US only makes you go through the first port only if you're continuing with a domestic flight. Guess I just have to figure out if I want my luggage to be laying around for hours at either end during the lay over.

If you have an overnight layover most airlines will not let you recheck your luggage upon leaving the customs area. You'll usually have to keep it with you and re-check it the following morning. Call and ask your particular airline.

Just to be clear - upon arrival at DFW you will clear immigration and customs (unless you arriving from a country like Toronto, Canadawhich has pre-clearance for US I&C).
Normally, you then recheck your luggage for your connecting flight upon leaving the customs hall. However, as I said in my earlier response many airlines will not hold your luggage overnight so you have to wait and Rachel it the following morning. Policies vary from airline to airline so check directly with your carrier to find out their particular policy.
