Beijing day trip... Dec 25 events?

We will be in Beijing for first time just 2 full days December 24 and 25 th. One day we want to go to the Great Wall at Mutianyu. Is it possible to do a short hike in winter? If we do a private tour to Wall what else is recommended to see that day? Is Summer Palace worth it in winter or should we head back to Beijing to cover more sights? We are not interested in Ming tombs if underground, as i am claustophobic. As far as i can tell sites are open Dec 25 th in Beijing. Are there any special events December 25 th? Thanks

If you have only two days, you might consider Badaling rather than Mutianyu, as Badaling is closer and easier to reach. And no need for a private tour -- you can reach either one easily on your own.

You should be able to find answers to your other questions in any decent guidebook.

Thank you ...looks like all will be open Dec 25. Is summer palace only gardens or do you tour inside? Guide books just talk about gardens so was wondering in winter if its worth going to.

IIRC, there are a few interiors at the Summer Palace, such as the Tower of Buddhist Incense, although that particular building might be closed for renovation at the moment. I suspect that the grounds are generally a bigger draw than the interiors. But even then, I can't tell you whether YOU would find it worth visiting the grounds when you are there or not. With so little time in Beijing, I'm not sure that I would make it a priority -- JMO.

We did not go underground at the Ming Rombs so no claustrophobia worries. Make sure you walk the Sacred Way.

Whether claustrophobic or not. the Ming Tombs that are often combined with a visit to the Great Wall are NOT among the most commonly recommended sites in the Beijing area.

With such limited time, I'm not sure it would make sense for you to contemplate including them in your plan. JMO.
