My heart is aching that you pass through Innsbruck without even stopping. With a baroque royal palace and a renaissance castle, not to tell the best shopping opportunities in the district, Innsbruck would deserve some time, more than Alpbach or Maurach.

Hi Aditi,
Between June 4th and June 9th, try to fit in a visit to Ludwig's Linderhof Palace. By the way, we love Mittenwald. We stayed in 4/05 and 10/06. The Karwendelbahn cable car right in Mittenwald is worthwhile.
Hall in Tirol is another favorite. We've stayed 18 nights over 5 stays at the Gasthof Badl in Hall in Tirol, as recently as Dec. 2013. If you aren't staying here, at least go for dinner in their restaurant. Excellent and reasonably priced.

The Berchtesgaden area is yet another favorite. We always stay here for trips including a visit to Salzburg. If you've seen enough of Ludwig's castles/places, maybe take a boat trip on the Konigsee, 10 min. from Berchtesgaden. Berchtesgaden to Salzburg is under a 30 min. drive. Again, over 5 stays we have stayed 18 nights near Berchtesgaden, as recently as Dec. 2013. Our 2 favorite places to stay in the area are:
The Pension Mayringerlehen in Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden, 10 min. from Berchtesgaden and the Guesthouse Friedwiese, in Schonau am Konigsee, less than 5 min. from Berchtesgaden.

I'd give a very slight edge to the Pension Mayringerlehen, since we like the farm aspect... goats, cows, chickens, etc., etc. A favorite place for dinner near Berchtesgaden is right on the B305 between Berchtesgaden and Ramsau be Berchtesgaden:

Zell am See is very picturesque. We stayed in 9/09. From Hall in Tirol, I would again go to the Zillertal and at Zell am Ziller, then take the Gerlos Pass to Mittersill to Zell am See. It's a nice, scenic drive.
We can recommend staying at:
www.pension-alpenrose.at/en/welcome/
Free parking and less than a 10 minute walk to the old town and lakeside promenade.
If interested, we have photo's of all these at:

PS: try a luge ride (Sommerrodelbahn) during your trip. A lot of fun.
Near Neuschwanstein is the Tegelberg cable car and luge ride:

Hey coffeequeen and asps..
Thanks for the responses! Would definitely consider all the acco recommendations.. Anyways I am struggling to find the same reasonably priced in smaller towns and villages.
Talking about the visits to linderhof, Innsbruck and Karwendelbahn.. they are definitely on my radar as day trips..
Please advise on the skiing bit.. How difficult is it for first timers.. Also my husband and I are really looking forward to lots and lots of snow on Hintertux and Grossglockner High Alpine Road!
Though I dunno if this will be the case in June.
Please pour in more suggestions for interesting places to visit in and around the towns mentioned.. we are not too much into history but really looovee the nature!
I'm all ears!

You have chosen wonderful places given you love nature.
Mittenwald - have stayed 6 nights over 2 visits. Delightful town. Lovely walk to the Leutaschklamm, great cablecar.
Berchtesgaden - have cruised the Koenigsee twice on different trips. Do go to Salet and walk the trail along Obersee to the beer garden, so beautiful. Mt Jenner has walks, but obviously cloud affects value of that.
Fuessen - another lovely town. So overlooked by day trippers. Instead of taking 'castle' bus, take the Tegelberg bus from the train station, cablecar up mountain, and walk the Reitweg trail for 2 hrs which takes you behind the castle to the famous bridge overlooking it. Nice walk along river too, in Fuessen, and the lake. Mountains, river, lake, forests, castles, so stunning.
Garmisch - consider Alpspitze for nice hiking trails, Zugspitze has a nice hike at the base lake Eibsee.
