RV road trip from CA to Idaho, Montana, Wyoming
Hi. My husband and I want to take our 3 young kids on a road trip towing our travel trailer to Idaho, Montana and Wyoming (in no particular order). Starting point will be in southern California. We are used to doing long road trips with the kids. Just looking for recommendations on routes to take, things to see, places to stay (campgrounds), etc. We are a very outdoorsy family. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

When? . . . time of year
How many days/weeks? |
After you answer janisj's questions, go to each of the state web pages for state parks and then do the same for National Parks and plan a route.
Come back and ask folks here if there will be things of interest for young kids, good campgrounds, how long to stay, etc. |
I'd guess the Brooklyn, CT Enterprise would be the most convenient.

Going this summer while the kids are out of school. We are not strict to a time and are thinking about going for a month or so.

Can we assume you are allocating time in both Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons?
|
From Southern California the route I would suggest is North on I-5 all the way to Medford Oregon. From Medford take Rt 62 to enter Crater Lake NP. There are 2 campgrounds inside Crater Lake NP. The quietest one is Pinnacles.
Exit Crater Lake by the north entrance and go to Bend. There are several nice campgrounds in the Bend/LaPine area. There is plenty to see and do in central Oregon. Leave Bend on US 20 east to Ontario to get on I-84 to Caldwell Idaho. You may want to leave the trailer to take a day trip to Crater of the Moon. Cross Idaho and enter Yellowstone through West Yellowstone MT. |

I think you wanted to post that on a different thread?? |
Sorry that posted here, the site has been a bit wonky, I've noticed other posts that have not been where they should have been too.

@ Sludick- yes, we are not limited on time and can do a month or so, spent however would be best for each spot.
Thanks Tomfuller! We did Crater Lake on our last big road trip and loved it! I'll check out the rest. Thanks |
Ages and interests of kids?

5, 3 and 1.5. Anything outdoorsy. We have a hiking backpack to put the younger one in and the older two boys enjoy hiking.
Will do, thanks traveler24! |
