Take the ferry from Cape May NJ to Lewes Delaware. If the weather is good, try fishing in the Delaware Bay or farther out in the ocean.
I like Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach.

In this heat, leave the pet home. Leave the pet home. Leave the pet home. With a pet sitter of course.

When we lived in the US (Washington, DC) it was a challenge to find dog-friendly attractions (beaches, in particular) as well as accommodations that didn't charge a small country's GDP in pet fees. (We discovered Cape Cod and a rental home that became "ours" for one week every summer.) We moved overseas six years ago and perhaps America has become more dog-friendly; but wherever you decide to go, I would research well and weigh the costs of a dog sitter against leaving the poor pup in a hotel room because s/he is not welcome anywhere.

Hey look at Thousand Trails or KOA if you want to take the dog. Many of them have pet friendly cabins, yurts or camping trailers. They usually have a pool as well .

I plugged in the dates for 8-20 to 8-25 for the Thousand Trails in Williamsburg VA and it is $108/night plus pet fee, and they have availability.

We used to rent pet-friendly houses on the Outer Banks every summer when we lived in the Washington, DC, area, but you do not say exactly what kind of activities you are interested in. There are numerous rental agencies on the Banks and you can find the websites by simply Googling Outer Banks rentals.

As to the ferry from Cape May, you may find it faster to drive down the Turnpike and then 95 to Delaware Rte 1 and go from there to Lewes, Rehoboth, and Bethany

Myrtle Beach. You won't be able to take the puppy on the beach. And "puppy" is a problem. Trained?
