Many Canadians, including people in Winnipeg, don't really think of it as full of great things to see and do.
But, it all depends on what you like and where you come from. If your son and his friends are lucky, they may get to see the Northern Lights. I used to be in Winnipeg every few weeks for about five years; sometimes with spare time I went to the zoo. There's an interesting park downtown, where two rivers meet. August 6 - 19 is Folklorama time. This is a giant multicultural festival, and for the boys from Iowa, it will be a chance to see lots of the world, without leaving Winnip[eg. The web site http://www.where.ca/winnipeg shopuld give them lots of info. One of their goals should be to find a Winnipeg-style hot dog. Sorry, but can't help on the camping. BAK |
Thanks for the information. Unfortunately they are due to be coming back home when the Folklorama starts. We have traveled alot with our son but never have been to Canada.

I love Winnipeg and there is lots to do. Unfortunately due to low precipitation there is no backwoods camping allowed. However, there is a campground just North East of Winnipeg they can go to (Birds Hill Park). They just have to follow Hwy 59 North and they will get to it on the right hand side(about 15 minutes outside of Wpg). They can also canoe on the two rivers in winnipeg, (rent canoes from Mountain Equipemnt Co-Op Store - they will give you itineraries for the day). You can also rent boats at the Forks (where the two rivers meet) and they will be right by the water - no driving with canoes required! Winnipeg is fairly safe (just use common sense). There are quite a few bars, depends on what music they're into. Corydon street is full of trendy lounges, cafes and shops. My favorite pub is The Kings Head Pub in the exchange district. There are football and baseball games going on right now which are always fun. If you need any other info just let me know!

Our family enjoyed a tour of the Winnipeg Mint. We also took a double-decker bus tour to familiarize ourselves with the city.
