Road trip.Nova Scotia to British Columbia
We are planning a cross-Canada roadtrip this summer (2011) and wonder if someone could help us with either a list of campgrounds along the way, or suggestions on how to compile a list (~day driving - 8 hrs duration). Thanks!

Without knowing how much time you want to spend seeing things each day, it's difficult to make suggestions.
Halifax to Fredericton. Fredericton to Quebec City Quebec City to Montreal Montreat to Ottawa --- want to go to Toronto, ot not? Ottawa to somewhere in Northern Ontario Somewhere in Northern Ontario to Thunder Bay Thunder Bay to Winnipeg Winnipeg to Regina Regina to Calgary Calgary to Banff Banff to somewhere in the Okanagan Valley Okanagan to Vancouver Vancouver to Victoria These are all segments than can be done comfortably in a day, with time to see some sights along the way. Where are you from? This is a very long trip. How much time are you planning for this trip?
Do you have a trailer or a tent? |
What route are you taking? I know some nice campgrounds in Ontario but it really depends on your route.

Thanks for your responses:
1. BAK - your suggested daily destinations sounds good. We do have family sprinkled across the country, whom we'd be spending a day/night or two with, and yes, we do have family in TO, and would be briefly stopping there. 2. irecommend: We're planning to use most of 4 wks (from Nova Scotia), for timeframe. We have a tent, but also, Excursion, which we can/may sleep in (at a campground) if it rains. 3.semiramis: Route - all Canada! We're crossing Canada, and I want it to be totally through Canada...no offense to USA...just that we want to cross Canada! |
Each province will have a tourist guide book which I recommend you send for. These will give all campgrounds in the provinces and an outline of the facilities.

sounds like an exciting trip! what exact route are you planning to take? there various campgrounds in the Canada that can accommodate your stay, but that would depend on what route you take.do you have an RV or a regular car?

I would suggest heading north from Banff, along the Icefields Parkway to Jasper - and then on to Vancouver. Better yet, drive the parkway twice - from Jasper, head south on it again, and then take #1 from Lake Louise to Vancouver (this way you don't miss Rogers Pass).
So, presumably in this 4 weeks, you will also need to drive back to your origin (on the east coast?) You'll want to allow a week for that. Also, if you want assistance from posters on setting your itinerary, it would be a good idea to post the stops that you want to make. |
drove from alberta to maritimes (not newfoundland - you need an entire week just to do that) and back again. spend 2 1/2 months and could have used another coupld of weeks.
with only 4 weeks, i'd focus on the maritime provinces or alberta and bc. |
No matter the pressure I would leave Vancouver Island for another time.
I've seen people here in Vancouver on similar odysseys and they often say <i>"Oh but we have to see Vancouver Island"</i>! but have little idea how big the place is/how much there is to see. |
