Road trip New Jersey to Houston Texas in December

Hi Peeps,

I am Planing a road trip from central New Jersey to Houston Texas in December,
we have 2 weeks for the round trip and we need suggestions as in which routes to
take and where to stop and explore and most important where to stay,
we are family of 5, twins 10 years old and daughter 8,
we love road trips and try to cover different areas every year, we have been and explored
farthest till Orlando
Rough itinerary:
Day 1: NJ to pigeon forge/Knoxville ( we have driven this far in one go last time we were in TN)
Day 2 : Explore smookeis or probably Dollywood ( we missed it last time we were there in TN)
Day :3 Drive to New Orleans ( we haven’t explored Louisiana and wanted to see it ( are there any kids friendly activities And must try eateries ( no need to be fine Dinimg), also recommendations for kids and budget friendly hotels
Day 4 : Nola
Day 5 : Nola
Day 6 : Nola
Day 7 : Houston ( same....what can we do there as a family)
Day 8: Houston ( kids activities)
Day 9: Houston ( recommended places to stay in Houston
Day 10: driving back we were wondering what could be the best route in sense that we can go through any one of the 3 states ( Arkansas, Alabama and Mississippi and make it stop for one day and break our journey with sight seeing, we love nature as well touristy things.
Day : 11
Day 12

sorry for long post but really looking forward to have great insights

I might suggest that rather than Houston choose either San Antonio or even Dallas. Houston is a really big piece of concrete!!
On your way to Nola you could stop in Montgomery and see the Civil Rights monument designed by Maya Lin at the Southern Poverty Law Center. It is one of the most effective and stunning memorials I've ever seen.
You'll want to sample "barbecue" all along this route. Alabama will have a pork bbq and white sauce. Texas will have beef brisket and white bread. Fun fun.
Dollywood will be a particular zoo at Christmas.
Around Nola you can explore Cajun country and the traditional bonfires they do around holiday time (which I assume is when you are travelling).
You "might" even consider making your trip just to and from NOLA and think about exploring Alabama, Mississippi and up to Memphis.

Good advice so far. At that time of year in the mountain areas you always have to be prepared for snow/sleet/freezing rain. Do have a plan B in case of bad weather.
