road trip from sicily to puglia

In a week I will be doing a road trip from Catania, sicily to the salentine peninsula in puglia. Have 6 days and have heard that the drive is 7 hours without stops. Does anyone have suggestions on where we should stop on the way: in Calabria, Basilicata etc? Looking to stop at pretty seaside towns before getting to Lecce in Puglia. Also any suggestions for Puglia would be appreciated. thanks!

If driving up the eastern coast of Calabria, Tropea seems to fit the bill. 2 interesting hill towns on the east coast are Stilo and especially Gerace.

By the way, the food is fantastic in Calabria, make sure you try a lot of different things!

Sorry, I can't get my thoughts out all at once! A good read about Calabria is "Stolen Figs," it will give you an idea about towns to see, food to eat.

Thanks so much! I was thinking about Tropea - heard that it was a beautiful seaside destination. Also that it is completely packed in the summer, but since we will be there end-May, I hope it will be ok ... thanks for the book rec, will look into getting it but since I live in Italy .. not sure about availibility!

Go to slowtrav.com and find my trip report from spring 2000. We did that same route. Also, there are some good trulli pics there.
