Road Trip from Raleigh, NC to Kansas City, MO - Route? What should I see and Eat?

I know it's pretty specific, but I'll be driving from Raleigh NC to Kansas City next month and am looking to plan my driving route to maximize sightseeing. I'm hoping for some recommended places to visit along the way. I enjoy seeing small towns and eating good local food. I've not visited the area before. I am thinking of taking around 1 week (5-7 days) for my journey, so plenty of time to see the sights in between these cities.

Also, where to stay along the way?

I appreciate any suggestions & recommendations.

I would go to Asheville for a day or two. Spend the night there. 4 hour drive.
Chattanooga is another 3.5 hours away. Plenty of things to see/do there, but it just depends on your interests.
Nashville is about 2 hours away. Spend the night downtown. Catch a show at the Ryman if you can.
Then it's 3 hours to Memphis. See Elvis things and eat some BBQ.
7 hours from Memphis to KC. Not sure of what to recommend along the way.

You might want to post on the OP's main thread where he's received lots of suggestions https://www.fodors.com/community/uni...d-eat-1720443/
