Road trip from Paris to Burgundy
We'll be in Paris for the holidays, and would like to do a road trip from Paris to the Burgundy region. Does anyone have a recommendation for where to stop along the way, and of things not to miss while there? I believe our destination is Beaune.

Vaux-le-Vicomte, Fontainebleau, Sens, Auxerre, Noyers /s Serein, Montréal (the church with its carved pews). The last two might take an hour each. The first two will require more time. With the two in the middle, it depends on what you want to see.

Semur en Auxois (Pron.: say-muhr ehn oh-swaw -- the x is silent, paradoxically)
Not too far off the autoroute. The handsomest town in France, bar none, IMHO. |
I like Michael's suggestion. We were at Sens on a Monday when the local market was taking place right around the cathedral grounds. The covered (food) market across the square was great. The cathedral and the hotel de ville are very beautiful. Also in the vicinity of Noyer is the town of Vincerolles which has a great Logis de France with first rate cuisine. Another little gem is Joigny with its narrow medieval streets. Have fun! We loved the area this fall.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have passed them on to my daughter, who will be the driver. She was familiar with some of the suggestions, and will check them all out, to see how much we can work in.

Lois, my mother who posts on fodors often (Judy) called me this morning from Beaune and is loving the region. She is currently sampling every lemon tart in town to make sure she finds Underhill recommended one! :-) My parents return from their trip on Sunday night and I am sure mom will be able to offer recommendations next week.

My husband and I just returned from a driving trip in Paris going from Lyon to Paris, stopping at small towns along the way. We were both disappointed in Flavigny, but were very impressed with Vandenesse-en-Auxois. We also thought Beaune was a little too touristy.

Any small hotel recommendations for the Burgundy area?

I was in France in July 2003. I stayed in Beaune at the Tulip Inn. It was a clean and quaint place. It was also right near a church that had some concerts going on which I would think would be possible during the holidays.
